TDM is still horrible, even with the abandon penalty

Was just on the wrong side of a game losing 18-2 and I left despite the abandon penalty.  If you shot anyone, multiple members of the enemy team would immediately turn & fire on you with perfect knowledge of where you were & incredible aim.  I personally don't care about 2 minutes of Time Out when that garbage is happening.  If you up the penalty to any longer, I simply won't play that mode.  I do not find getting absolutely obliterated repeatedly any fun at all.  No thank you.

    Apex Legends:

Skill gap too wide + matchmaking too indifferent to things like SKILL + new gametype designed to magnify all these problems = quitfest.

Now take that equation and add in quit penalty and you get... wait for it... absolutely no change whatsoever.

Respawn, if you're going to punish people for playing your game then you have to step up to the plate and make the game worth playing. In the case of tdm this means immediate and radical changes to your matchmaking algorithm. Without that the mode is doa.

  • @HappyHourSumwur I'm seeing people die and insta quit. Like they are in BR thinking they need to requeue. I'm almost certain people are so used to doing that they do it in every mode now.
  • If it is only one or two players, I kind of prefer it when team mates leave death match.  They are, almost without exception, the ones just feeding points to the enemy, and their leaving helps the team. Even four on six is quite winnable - I've seen a single player win games on their own, though obviously it is quite rare.

What we need IMO is the backfill mechanic to be gotten working.

"I'm seeing people die and insta quit."

It happens a lot, I know. I do it myself sometimes. When you observe it happen it's reflex to think, "Oh, that guy doesn't like being killed so he poor-sported it to the lobby." But I know from experience that I can be killed and say to myself, "Yup, he did that right and I did it wrong and I got what I had coming to me." And there are other times (many in this game) where what happens to you seems, to put it mildly, a strain on credibility. If I played tdm, which I don't, and if everyone on the other team was able to kill me in the minimum ttk + 5%, when my typical kill is minimum ttk + 300%... then I would have to be asking myself how I ended up in that lobby and what purpose is being served by my being there.

In other words, it often has very little to do with being killed and everything to do with HOW one is killed. And this game is designed in a such a way that matches like I described are the rule rather than the exception. IMO, it's a wonder more people don't quit more often.

@reconzeroAgreed. My enjoyment of the game is tied more to HOW I get killed. If I missed my shots, didn't pay attention to my surroundings, put myself in a bad position, or made a dumb decision then I'll take that. If I die immediately with absolutely no chance &/or against players obviously way better than me (legit or no, doesn't matter), then I'm more likely to rage quit.

The net quality of my matches is what is stopping me from spending any more money in this game. It is about the quality of the experience and MM has more influence on that than almost anything else in this game.

@reconzero The people I'm seeing doing it are the ones running randomly out front on low ground to a spot with high ground above. If these people think that doing this once and dying is because the MM put them in a bad lobby they really have no idea.

@HappyHourSumwur The MM has serious issues. I won't disagree with that. But I also guarantee too many people die stupid deaths due to poor play and then instantly blame the game. I see it with friends all the time.
