The problem with Crypto

So, I’ve been a Crypto main since he dropped into the game in season 3 and have 5k kills with him. I also play around with other characters too, but typically I eventually gravitate back to Crypto. However, I’ve recently decided that I’m probably going to be looking for a new main. The reason for this is it continues to be a struggle to be a part of the fight while being Crypto, especially when solo queuing.

I try to mitigate the issue by using the drone in short burst, at times just quickly taking a peak at the banners for the number of squads in range. If there is someone in range and my squad isn’t travelling ahead without me, I might look around to see if I can spot and mark the other squad(s), but if they are moving ahead I quickly come out and work to keep up, which is ok and is honestly acceptable and probably unavoidable. However, with recent changes, the EMP now damages team mates, and with teammates constantly pushing straight into the fight, I am constantly put in a position of whether I use my ult or not. If I use it, I have commonly gotten yelled at by squad mates because I’m damaging them too, and if I choose not to use it, then what is the sense in being Crypto if I often can’t use my Ult. Obviously this is not always the case, but it does create the internal debate on whether I am better of using a different character who I can use to the best of their abilities freely.

Recently, I have been trying out multiple different characters, which allow me to stick closer to my team and use their abilities freely and have noticed a dramatic increase in my wins and kdr, which tells me it’s time to move on from Crypto even though I would rather not.

The one way I can think of to try and make Crypto more viable is if his EMP did not do damage to him or his teammates, though I still think that it should slow  everyone’s movements in order to keep it from being too OP. This would allow him to stay closer with his teammates on the push and not risk damaging his teammates which just causes strife within the squad.

  • they nerfed him too hard by making the emp slow down team-mates, it’s quite sad how they reverted back

crypto barely gets anything from battle passes too

    1 dive emote still ☹️

im up to 10700 kills on crypto and i see my team-mates running from my emp because they are almost afraid of it :/

  • Yeah and Crypto didn’t even get his dive emote until after Revenant got his in the season 4 battle pass. Hard to forget that.

Since switching from Crypto, I’ve been mainly playing Bloodhound and Loba, I’ve noticed a drastic increase in my KD and win rate. It’s easier to keep up with my teammates and push the fight with them, which has meant many more kills and far less assists. However, what I’ve noted now, is just how much I hate playing with Crypto’s on my team. They slow down the pace, or you have to leave them behind, most because they still don’t understand how to use him right, but also for reasons that can’t really be helped. And I’be definitely been hearing a lot of negativity from other players directed at Crypto mains in general since I’ve stopped playing as him. Much of that negativity, I can now appreciate since I’ve stopped playing as him, but it also makes me a little sad, because I really enjoyed playing as Crypto, and I think he has a lot to offer a team if some good changes are made to help make him more viable, but where he’s at right now, he’s just not.

  • @Sadronan  I feel ya, I do enjoy using crypto and when in a premade its much easier to use him.

In solo queues i mainly just use the drone for banner collection, checking squads in the area via champion banners, survey beacons and the occasional emp poke before third partying. Randoms don't have enough patience to even let me set the drone up above the fight to give them clear movement intel lol.

  • I agree crypto could use a few buffs. However I do like him for solo queue to pick up teammates banners because in solo you get a bunch of awful teammates so i feel like crypto is a blessing for solo not a curse. If they talk * I pick them up and then don't res. If they are cool easy to res and continue on.

  • @SadronanI have 1200+ hour in apex and I just got two good crypto player :P
other just use drone 24/7 xd

@MandatoryIDtag I stopped trying to setup the drone in good position long ago, for just that reason, I use the EMP and as soon as I feel sure it will go off without being shot down, I’m out and rushing in to try and be as much a part of the actual fight as I can be.

  • @SWgeebz I agree that can be very useful, but unless we’re talking about ranked, I find it very seldom that I actually get the chance to even use the drone to pick up tags, because the most people in solo queues seem to leave the second after they are down lol

  • @xMaxrayx Exactly! I had a match near the end of season 6 in ranked with a Crypto that would be constantly in his drone and the time we got in a fight he got in his drone, saw that there were 4 squads in the area and he just took off running across the map. He didn’t even try to help us with his EMP. We won the fight we were in but we ended up getting downed while trying to catch back up with him and he was too far away to even consider grabbing our tags!!

The funniest part about the whole thing, is this crypto sat in the same rat hole for the next 2 rings flying his drone around, and when he finally got beat was when another solo Crypto came looking to hide in the same rat hole lmao.

Now don’t get me wrong, I understand the need to hide in a rat hole when your the only member left in a ranked match trying to secure placement points, but I lost all sympathy for him due to the way he ended up in that position.
