I’m looking to improve my game in Apex Legends, especially in ranked matches. What strategies do you use to increase your chances of winning?

This entire game is built around the tension that exists between what your instincts tell you to do and what you actually should do. Engagement vs. survival. One is fun, the other is "boring." Some will say you can't survive without fighting, and that is generally (though not always) true. But the real truth is that the more fighting you do the more your odds of failure increase. It really is that simple. Fight less, win more. The questions are two-fold. How do you get the gear you need and the position you want without constantly having to fight for it? And second, even more important, how do you get an entire population of trigger-happy, short attention span randoms to go along with you? There are all kinds of good answers to the first question, and none for the second.
