BF 2042 Anti-Cheat Question concering VPN clients

Hi all.  Important 2-part question about the Anti-Cheat measures in Battlefield 2042 and VPN Clients (as some players I would believe use one on their PC's on a regular basis), will using a VPN client while the game is loaded and playing be considered a cheating violation of Easy Anti-Cheat and result in a insta-perma ban to the game?  Do you recommend players with VPN clients turn off their client or disconnect it before loading the game?  I don't know if this was mentioned in the released information and I know some games with online components are OK with VPN clients in use while playing and some aren't.  That's why I ask not just for me but for others who I imagine are wondering the same thing.  Thanks for the answer and until next time I am out!

  • Hi @TsR-RareAir23 ,

First off, I am just an ordinary BF player like you and not any official in any way.  So just my personal opinion here.

I think that trying to spoofing your IP or your geographic location by using VPN while gaming is a terrible sad thing and its definitely adding to poorer network/server performance for all stakeholders involved.  Hence my own disapproval for players utilizing such means for their gaming activities, as it also negatively affects other players in the same game server environment.  (higher latency and jitter, potentially causing server lag, rubberbanding, bullet sponging...)

That said, I would not think it is considered cheating, on its own...

Now some AC measures may block VPN users from accessing at all, namely because of the fact, you can spoof your true IP and thereby potentially avoid types of hardware/location bans, which the gaming company intended to instill.  If so, the gaming company will block access to their servers if connection request comes from such known VPN IPs.

There may be some legitimate reasons why a player may want to use a VPN to connect, though its hard to list any solid ones if the purpose is just to access some gaming.

  • Probably not and there are so many VPN services, you can always just use another one.

Look at Netflix: you aren't allowed to use VPN for that. Use a banned VPN service and you can't visit content you like to see. But if you use the next banned service that isn't on their list, you are free to go.

I can't think of much of a legitimate reason for using VPN for this though. Countries where you need to use a VPN to access any website will probably not even have a good enough bandwidth to play games online.

@TsR-RareAir23 There are clients, like NordVPN, that allow you to exclude certain apps from being tunneled. So you can safely browse the web behind the VPN while gaming with the best possible network performance in Battlefield at the same time. If you current VPN software does not have this feature i would consider finding a better client or provider. Alternatively, you could disable VPN while gaming and resort to VPN browser extensions for your browsing privacy while playing. That way you keep those activities safe,

... though i don't know why you would browse the web, or do anything else, while playing :D I am too busy dodging bullets usually. :D
  • @TsR-RareAir23You will probably find a lot of people frown upon using a vpn while gaming, but that's because there has been an almost criminal generalization tied to their use ( which obviously that's unfair ), but you know how it is, they hear one bad story and then their memory is forever sealed lol.

People who are gaming from a rural location often don't have very stable internet connections and require a gaming VPN service to help improve routing (this decreases packet loss and also reduces ping) and or bonding requirements to improve stability (eg. two connections in redundancy bonding mode).

For example, my primary connection is Starlink ISP, which is very fast, and has high bandwidth but due to coverage can be a bit spotty which can cause packet loss and or disconnections from servers during gameplay, and my secondary connection which is more stable but much slower is what I call my backbone connection, which I bond to my primary connection via a bonding service called speedify (not advertising), and my packets will pass through their VPN before being delivered to the game server. What this does is sends one packet down each connection and the first to make it back wins, but if the primary packet drops, the second packet on the backbone will replace it, and this makes my connection super stable.

Sadly some people don't account for VPN based services for gaming and ban all use, even though these services are crucial for some to be able to access internet services to begin with.

Some examples are routing services like WTfast, and (aus)Telstra's routing services, or speedifys routing/bonding services.

With that said, If I can't use a VPN, they won't be getting my money, and there is not much I can do about that because I have to use one and it's not a choice.  Most games allow it, sometimes uneducated server owners enforce their own anti vpn stance on their servers.

In fact, using proxy servers helps to hide your location in the game and on the general Internet.
  • This is on the older side of time, I'm closing this thread to stop it from being necroed.
