Climbing versus Vaulting

Vaulting doesn't work in modern games and feels inconsistent. I think a much better system would be climbing. If you want to still vault over something, you would need to climb it first, then jump over. This system would clean up a lot in my opinion.

First issue is how inconsistent it is when jumping over something. If the object is 7 feet long or just 1 foot, you launch yourself to that end point. This feels off to the the player doing it and for the enemy trying to track that movement. This is one of those little things that adds up to shots not registering correctly and making it difficult to try and stay on target. It just adds so many problems especially with how the current netcode works. Basic rule of thumb for shooters, the faster and more erratic players move, the less accurate the server is when detecting players position and hit registration.

Another issue is accidentally vaulting unintended objects. The game checks your distance from an object, is player holding "jump", if player is withing vaulting distance and holding jump? send them to that object, then yeet player over it! This can look very abrupt when seeing an enemy move faster then what seems possible in the game. I first used the word teleport, which isn't completely fair but not that far off either. Have you ever vaulted something in mid fight because you were trying to jump? Another advantage of a climbing system would be, is the player touching the object?, is player holding the "jump" key for 200ms?, now the player can climb. This would solve that issue.

Last issue is when trying to climb with the current vault system on a map like Redacted. It feels terrible and you have to spam your jump so many times to eventually climb something. It's just a really clumsy mechanic for climbing. For example the hill on the C objective, or the rock formation next to the room on the B flag, It feels like the game is trying to decide if you can jump past it or if it should place you on top of the object. It's messy in design.

This might seem trivial, but it's something I do notice it every round. Sometimes I just want to jump on top of something rather then flinging myself over it. I've despised the vaulting system for quite a while now and it's only been implemented worse and worse with in game geometry. That's my rant on it. Thoughts?
