Crossplay - why so much latency ?

Hi

Crossplay on - you get into servers with a lot of players - no bots - but for some reason - I feel like I have 150 ms + of delay. Way too often I'm killed instantly I see someone. I could be slow - and always when dead I check if I was killed by 2 or just one. Now when I turn it off - things turn 180 around - now no delay - I hit what I shoot at and not empty a whole mag into a person. So this makes me wonder - how exactly is this crossplay working ? What does the EA server do to make this crossplay work ? Do it need to translate / talk with some server in PS / xbox world ? Does it work perfect in the US and bad in Europe ?

Turn crossplay off means - hard to find servers and too often filled with bots. I do understand the idea behind this but something is not working ok. Also do not know if this is valid test but in windows when I check connection towards xbox live - firewall = open but I get 150 ms - like travel to US or something ?

Long time ago it was like this - night and day difference on vs off - then around spearhead map / season it was not like that - and now again.

Anything to do on my side or is this just how it is by design ?

There's clearly something going on, when playing with cross play off you can instantly feel the difference. And after all the posts here EA/DICE have to know this also, but what we get is silence.

Sorry, I wish I had an answer for you.

It's because of the differences in recoil reduction and aim assist for consoles. Those extra values have to be computed at some point in the interactions between client and server.

So console to console, timing is even. PC to PC timing is even. Mixed, everything is slightly off.

That and needing to go through Xbox Live/PSN too I would imagine.

I have BF2042 on all platforms.  There is no ping difference. No indication that console packets are making an additional hop.

Also not buying the theory that aim assist is server side.

I'm not saying there isn't a cross play latency issue, just not convinced in these theories.

  • @Col_LarsenPreach friend! You’ve been around the forums long enough to see all the posts. Network latency, 45hz servers, aim assist, out of region match making… so many theories but we’re all just blowing smoke as Dice won’t talk about it. Since S5 dropped my latency is still 27, but my ALAT has gone from 35 to 50 or more. The fun servers are when I get 35-50-35-50 for the entire round. The network graph looks like I’m having a heart attack. It’s been awful, basically unplayable. To date we still don’t know why.

@CTD-Coolhand Good netcode video. I'll add this visual aid to help show the difference between a low tick rate and a high tick rate.

    20 Tick Rate

    100 Tick Rate

  • Besides the tick rate, the "server" itself is probably a cheap P4 dinosaur from 15 years ago. Cheapest system with cheap connection to keep profits as high as possible. I've been playing this series since 1942 and they have never had a good public server. Most hosting services from back in the day where leaps and bounds better.
