How Can I Play This Game Better?

Hey all,

I started playing a lot of Battlefield with 3 in 2014 and have played bits and pieces of 4, 1 and 5, but not very much. I took an 18 month hiatus from any gaming and recently purchased a PS5. I have been playing that BF 2042 open beta and will play BF1 until 2042 comes out officially, which I'm anticipating I'll play the hell out of.

Anyway, I've never been super good at Battlefield and want to be better. I'm looking for some general tips. I primarily play conquest. I've had some good rounds in my time but I have had a lot of bad ones. As far as the 2042 Beta goes, I'm getting eaten alive. My main issues are moving around the map and shooting. With moving around the map, I try to move in cover and take less obvious routes between capture points but I find myself getting picked off repetitively. I try to spawn in vehicles when they're available and I try to move with the team as much as possible, but I often lose the team and get myself shot. Any tips on how to approach moving around the map will be much appreciated. I'm also unsure of when I should run or walk etc.

As far as capturing and defending goes: When defending a capture point, I try and stay within a building and anticipate enemies coming from the direction of the closest point held by them and try to pick them off as they come in. However I find as I'm checking different point, I end up getting flanked and shot out of nowhere. What are some tips I should be mindful of when defending?
As far as attacking goes, I always try and make sure that I move with the team when going for an objective, I'll aim to stay behind surrounding cover near an objective such as a rock or bush and end up being flanked from behind, regardless of having a lot of team mates around. What are some tips that would help me here? t's frustrating as I feel like this is a fairly logical approach but I still suck. I feel like I either move around too fast or too slow.

As far as gun fights go - I find it hard to keep the analog stick on target. I practice by aiming at friendlies and trying to follow them as they run at a moderate distance and can't seem to stay on target. I have the sensitivity at a level that feels comfortable but the stick still feels a little jerky. Perhaps this is just a matter of getting used to the PS5 controller and analog sticks again but I find myself losing gunfights I should probably have won by getting shot while I'm still trying to get on target.

I think that's about it. I always aim to PTFO but I'm just getting owned. I look forward to seeing what tips people have. I feel like Battlefield is 2 completely different games at the noob level and at the decent level and I'd like to be playing on the decent level and have those doors open.

Thanks.

  • @Rbs950Good on you for seeking out ways to get better. To preface, I do not claim to be a god-tier Battlefield or any FPS player, but I do feel as though I understand FPS games and their underlying systems well enough to offer something.

    1. Aim training. Unfortunately not a lot of options on PS5 just yet, however you are on the right track by practicing tracking, stopping, flicking, etc. Accuracy over speed... then speed up. Gradually work toward consistent headshots. Learn recoil patterns and do not forget secondaries.

    2. Win the individual fights. This is the first step to winning 2 v 1s, 3 v 1s, etc. Shoot first and stay on target. Prioritize greatest threat first, which is usually closest to furthest.

    3. Use of cover. Sounds like you are doing it where possible. Map knowledge helps a lot here, but eventually you will habitually seek out cover and move in ways that make you a hard target. Try to always reload in cover.

    4. Have an out. Relates to the above and map knowledge, but know where you can fall back to if your situation changes mid-fight. Sounds like you already orient toward likely avenues of attack, which is great. Check your flanks often.

    Rinse and repeat above ^

Otherwise, remember PTFO has greater earning potential for points than kills. However, it will almost certainly cause your K/D to drop, due to the kinetic and chaotic nature of those areas.

One additional note for Battlefield 2042 is crossplay. PS5 will have crossplay with Xbox Series S/X and PC enabled by default. PC players will have a natural advantage over PC players since mouse and keyboard inputs are not going to work on consoles for launch... just something else to keep in mind.

Good luck and see you on the Battlefield.

  • @Rbs950Don't worry too much at the moment.
Communication is key in this game and the Beta just didn't have much available.
Join a squad, communicate and support your team-mates.
If you find you struggle at first to rack up the kills then play in a support role. Carry an ammo box, equip the medic class, use a recon drone.....all these things contribute to the performance of your squad and your team.
Over time you'll learn the maps and capture points better. You'll know where to go (and more importantly where NOT to go) to be effective.
Don't be afraid to ask squadmates for advice (you got that down already) regarding tactics and loadouts. Ask the squad leader what he needs in his (or her) squad (they may need a medic or ammo bearer more than another recon).
Don't hesitate to swap squads if the one you're in doesn't work together. When you find a good squad send a friend request to the players so you can team up with them again in the future.
Experiment with your controller settings over time. Reduce the sensitivity if you find you have trouble staying on target. Expect to get owned regularly by PC players who will be bunnyhopping and 180 no-scoping all over the place. It's just what we (on consoles) will have to accept with crossplay.
If you are not a good pilot, give the aircraft over to someone who is. Nothing hurts more than a Condor with 5 passengers slamming into the ground.
Practice, observe, improve....it all takes time.
    Kap.

  • Bit hard giving advice on a beta.

I would say spot enemies like a crazy thing =P. So much easier when you know where the enemy are, which is extremely easy on BF1. If the beta stuff stays the same for launch then casper specialist had a passive perk which told you when enemies were near, plus the drone, and you can run with proxy grenades.

On a position I'd go to the spot I'm least likely to get shot and then once the proxy grenade/passive shows the enemy hunt them down. Or I was using the drone on a safe position to watch for people running in.

Or you could stay further away from a position which has a lot of teammates on it and then shoot the enemy as they run in from a direction they're not expecting.

You don't all need to be in a tiny square.

Sound and minimap should stop you getting killed from behind which means not staying on scoped for ages.

On aiming if you're using BF1 extended 3.85 medic gun was easiest for me. Beta was the smgs or assault rifles then the dmr. But I hope they're gonna do a balance pass.

Dont run in the open and make sure you play defensively near wooded areas

  • Hi @Rbs950 🙌

First of all i would say, just don't get frustrated to much about your first experience in the Beta and how it feels at the fiest place.

Cause from the built of the Beta till the launch of the final game many things will change related to how the game and connection runs, the movement, weapon and vehicle balance ect.

So for sure get a new first experience then as well, maybe feels already better then, and still then over time the Team will change and balance stuff because of feedback that continues after launch.

    Now to your actual question:

Well there is many tips and tricks for playing better.

The first and most important thing is to get used to the game and it's physics itself.

If you play any Weapon, keep playing it and get used to it like how the recoil is ect. to be better in controlling it and the handling in a gunfight.

Get used to the map and your surroundings, like where are ways to flank the enemy or where they could probably flank you from.

(map knowledge and your weapon handling are Nr. 1)

Another really important thing is, get the right settings for the controls, sound and display on the game!

Seriously, spend some time on a server (just in the base or somewhere) and go through all the settings and adjust them the way it feels best for you and also helps you a lot in certain situations if adjusted right. Check all of them and read what they change, cause some can make a big difference. 😉

On the other hand, there is just experience that makes you get better in certain things. Keep playing (and having fun of course), learn from your mistakes and keep staying with your team. Especially the squad. And communicate in a chat if you play with friends.

Also as soon as the game is released, some pretty good Battlefield players will make tutorials  on YT for settings and gameplay tips and tricks. So just search for them and you will find a lot, for ever type of class or vehicle there are Pro's around that share their knowledge. 🙌

    Greets,

    Travis
