Need opinions on getting back into the game after 18 months

Hey folks.  I'm a longtime Battlefield player (since BF4), 57 years old, never been very good at the game in terms of killing but I love BF because of the team and support aspects.  Out of curiosity I reloaded BF2042 and started trying to get back into it, and, well...I'm struggling.

Here's the deal.  I like to run and gun and aggressively play objective offense and defense, mostly as infantry, but I am total garbage at it.  I haven't messed with much in the way of FPSes for over a year now so I'm rusty as hell (and that layer of rust basically only covers more rust).  I'm trying to get back into the game playing Angel and throwing ammo like it's going out of style and that's OK, but I'm dying ridiculous amounts.  Feels like every time I stick my head up I'm getting taken down almost instantly.  I don't think it's the game, I just think I've lost whatever touch I may have had for playing 128-player Conquest.  I haven't unlocked a lot of the weapons that are locked behind achievements and accomplishments (since I haven't played since, like, uh, S2?) so I'm using things like the K30 and SFAR-GL and getting mollywhopped.  Oh, and I don't have a squad or platoon or group to play with in 2042.  I do in BF4 but they stick to that pretty much.

Anybody got any advice for a casual, bottom-percentile player to get back into BF2042 and have some fun?  Nopats or weapons that are particularly easy/forgiving to use while I get my BF legs back under me?  Things to avoid?  Game modes to avoid (64 vs. 128?  Conquest, Rush, TDM)?

Performance wise the game feels a lot better since the last time I played, and I want to get back into it (and BF4) at least a little bit.  Thanks.
