Re: Frostbite 2.0 > 3.0

@doubleome

The Frostbite engine and netcode are two separate things.

That said the Frostbite engine is quite old and very difficult to program with, I feel the only reason they use it is because it is free "EA owns it"

The networking code is a separate issue. And requires skill to make work properly.

    Much agreed @sk1lld  !

    @doubleome , please also notice that EA disbanded referring to a given version number of Frostbite quite some years back (2015-ish ?).  Reason is that its not really a specific dedicated version of Frostbite as such, the dev team is using anymore.  In recent years it has been like a fluid incremental add-ons/fixes along the way, as EA started to use it across many other games than just BF, including also many non shooter games.

    Which is probably also a main cause for the serious poor performance we have seen from in it recent BF games, as simply too many compromises/complexities have been made to accomplish what they wanted from it in other games like Need For Speed, FIFA, Madden NFL, PGA Tour, NHL, Dragon Age...

    Next Gen > Last Gen.

    They had to reduce destruction and a whole bunch of other stuff to support last gen consoles. The next title will not have that restriction. That is a huge part of the problem. The other half is the spaghetti code that exists in the engine.

    @sk1lld someone said that they allegedly do a massive overhaul for frostbite for the next BF game that will make it easier to new devs but I will wait and see

    Personally I think current state Frostbite is beyond 'repair' or 'overhaul'...

    Its such a mixed bag, full of compromises from yester-years game developments and backwards compatibility limitations, that its not just a question of a bit of 'house cleaning' and incremental updates we need here.

    It will most probably take a thorough full new design and bottom up exercise to build the next next-gen Frostbite from scratch instead.

    That is...

    If EA will still rely on/insist to utilize their own proprietary inhouse game engine?

    Other and potentially better alternatives do exist.

  • I think they have no choice, once games go full next gen and utilize the full potential of the unreal engine for instance I doubt frostbite at least what it has shown to be capable of since BF3 won’t cut it.

    Dice always did special things with each iteration of Battlefield and they did it out of passion, with 2042 they did nothing out of passion purely looking at what sells in the market and turning what made Battlefield big and used it for the marketing while completely butchering the concept.

    They gotta hit big and hope they know it, but am afraid looking at the S4 trailer which looked amazing the actual content doesn’t match the hype of the trailer, and that’s the Dice I don’t like and seems they are comfortable after everything to still sell their games with marketing instead of making an actual proper game.
