Re: Having the same exact hero on both sides of the field is unimaginative

The same specialists on each side are just weird, even though DICE has been trying to make a story behind it. I'm not a fan of these personalities. I'm fine with DICE trying to give access to all weapons / gadgets, but wish they had done so without heroes and with different factions.

When considered alongside the back story, the same specialist in each side makes sense as they are technically mercenaries.

At anytime, there are 10 possible character models in a game, each with several skins that are more than just overlays of a default model.

With the exception of BFV, all previous games have only had 8 different character models with each side limited to 4 and at best, different coloured overlays.  As the OP has discounted factions, then so will I.

As said before, 'lazy' is a very lazy argument against specialists.

As much as I disliked BFV, it did get customisation about right but then the 'community' didn't warm to it for some legitimate but mostly rediculous reasons.

Once the blue dot missing over friendlybheads was fixed, I can safely say I have not shot at a friendly Boris or not shot at an enemy Boris because of their model/skin.

Faction locking skins could be away to resolve the percieved  problems.

  • My argument is that it's lazy in comparison to other games. If they insist on using these heroes why not make a hero specific for both factions?

That would make sense instead of the very obvious "clone wars" meme that many people have been spouting. That is what I mean by 'lazy'. Perhaps I should have used the word "unimaginative" initially, but both work.

Maria Falck, veteran combat medic acting as a mercenary No-pat, appearing on both Russia and U.S makes no sense to the game environment and (I'm gonna use the buzzword here) takes away from the immersion of being in a war-torn, violent, despairing world

  • I think the reason people don't like the Specialist is that it reminds them too much of Fortnight and they consider that a kiddy game.  I for one enjoy the Specialist and think they add an extra amount of strategy to an already stale class system as we have seen in past BF games.

Agree. It seems childish and not what I expect from a BF game. As mentioned, I am not against the principle only the way it is done.

I cannot speak for everyone, but one particular reason of a handful I have about disliking specialists is detailed in the post I made. It may sound strange, but I cannot stand the personalities that EA/DICE has injected into these heroes and with that I don't like how specialists make Battlefield into a hero shooter (also mentioned in this post)

@rippedwire01 But then is what is having a squads full of identical medics with only 'faction' differences if not 'lazy'? Medics on either side functioned identically.

    An extreme example....

Boris A and Boris B both went to Boris school.

When the No Pat War kicked off, Boris A went with the Russians because he agreed with their Socialist ideals, Boris B went to America because they paid more. As they both went to the same Boris school, they look the same.

Again, BFV is the only Battlefield that achieved a level of customisation that addresses such issues but was not well received by the 'community'.
  • Making Battlefield into this hero shooter was a mistake as I attempted to mention in the post

Between factions, classes appeared differently. The Chinese engineer looked different than the U.S engineer. The Ottoman medic appeared differently than the U.S medic. I am not opposed to having a squad full of the same Ottoman medic if it means that a squad full of the same British medic appears differently.

What I should not be seeing is a squad full of Maria Falcks killing an identical squad of Maria Falcks because it makes no sense to the loose story that EA/DICE has made for 2042

If they wanted to use your example of extra-dimensional Boris, they should have mentioned this dimensional jumping is present in the setting of 2042. They did not, so I must assume that a battlefield of 128 Boris makes no sense

Especially with these heroes injected personalities.

@rippedwire01You're bringing factions into it when you dismissed them earlier!

BF1 had no customisation what so ever so the character models were absolutely identical on each side, I don't recall any complaints.

I see you have changed your thread title to unimaginative and the BF1 example is exactly that!

Fact is, we cannot have an infinite number of different character models, even expecting 128 is a bit of a stretch. Not sure what you mean by this 'dimensional' malarkey around my example, it wasn't supposed to literal, just a way of explaining why one of 10 different character models may be on different sides at the same time.

Again, only BFV has been really close to what you seem to want, given the level of customisation and the manner in which friend and foe are distinguishable in BF2042 though, it is not a massive issue.

I have probably shot at more friendlies or not shot at enemies in past games.

Also, expect more skins so the differences will multiply.

It is by no means perfect and could have been done differently, as I mentioned earlier faction locked skins could be a relatively simple solution but it is by no means a massive issue. In many ways, the same 'issue' can, in my opinion, be applied to previous games.
