Repetition of the Same Mistakes

Watching the Hazard Zone reveal was an interesting experience, and highlighted several things for me. The first being that DICE is trying something somewhat new with a BR-like mode, which is cool, but is also showed that they didn't learn from Firestorm and why it failed severely.

In case it needs to be described as to why, Firestorm failed because it was gated behind a pay wall. Whether or not it turned out to be a fun mode, and whether or not Hazard Zone will prove to be a fun experience, it will suffer a similar fate that Firestorm had simply because it gives no real introduction to an average player who might be thinking "Hey, I think I'll try this mode and see how I feel about the rest of the game".

This is why Warzone was largely successful. CoD did what CoD does best with it's multiplayer and Campaign experience, and additionally included Warzone to get more players on board.

DICE, I don't work there. I know I don't see all that happens behind closed doors. But why is it so difficult to learn from previous mistakes? Why is it so difficult to maintain the distinguishing features your franchise is known for in your base game? I would think EA would want this game to be successful, perhaps they had forgotten why that was the case years ago. Portals could be the only reason I really buy this game, and by now, I'm more interested to refund my purchase and move on to other team base shooter like SQUAD, Insurgency, and even to continue playing older titles like BF4 and BF1.

What a shame, to those that have been around for this long and witnessed the Company and Developer's strides and failures. I see now where the priorities lie, and as I'm sure it is with most others, it's just business to you all now.

If anyone feels like I'm way off, just say so. I'd love to enjoy this game for what it offers, but it feels to me like the biggest departure from why I loved the franchise from the beginning.

That's just one way it might have been tackled.  I'm sure there are more imaginative people than me who could find more elegant solutions. My point is though, I was really looking forward to something new in the use of technology to reflect the future setting. Soldiers dragging themselves around with grappling hooks was not what I had in mind.

    Great point @lzilchetl

Despite what some keep insisting on, then this BF2042 game is not innovative at all.

And looking at the whole package, then this next BF game is...:

    • Titled to be taking place in 2042.
    • To be launched in 2021.
    • Beta programmed allegedly in 2019 (or what is the excuse now?)
    • Having game mechanics like in games from 2010.
    • Have graphics and movements like in computer games made in 1998.
    • And include weapons/gadgets like a grappling hook, which was a cool new thing when used by Roman soldiers back in year 260 BC!!! 😀

Brilliant! Made me laugh! Its the truth though isn't it! I've remained optimistic since the reveal and been a bit impatient with the doomsayers... but I'm struggling to imagine how the build used in the beta might become the game that I was hoping was going to knock my socks off.

@UP_HawxxeyeIn fairness, BF5 failed on a lot more levels than marketing. While it wasn't the trainwreck that was battlefront, it was probably closer to battlefront 2 in how things went from launch to "fixed state".

The most objective, level headed and accurate assessment read  to date. A great post.

Really like the fact you bring BF3 into the debate. Everyone references BF4, but my memory is of a really lumpy launch and moved things on little from BF3. BF3 was (literally) a game changer and (as you say) raised the bar. We'd never seen anything like it. We'd all been playing BC2 when it launched (and as popular as BC2 was) BF3 felt like the ultimate FPS. A step change.

And I guess I am looking for that feeling of stepping forward with BF2042. If Dice haven't learnt from BF1 (understanding the context @CyberDyme  described) and the drift away from what the game is about with BFV (and the resulting loss of revenue) then Dice aren't who I thought they were. They should have rallied and recreated that true contribution to advancing the genre in the same way BF3 did. Lets face it, If we learn from our mistakes, Dice should be quids-in.

(for the record, I thought that BF1 was the most atmospheric and beautiful game ever produced, but I never got on with it... I want bombers and guns with lots of loadout options, I wanna do the maths and  earn my options for tailoring my loadouts)

I'll still play, and enjoy 2042, But if the Beta is indicative, its not the game I thought it might be.
