In BF2 you had to choose to join a squad. You weren't forced into a squad or auto placed in one. It allowed squad leaders to rename squads to tailor the squad to specific roles. If you saw a "teamwork" or "VOIP" squad you knew that's what you were going to be in for. If you saw something like "Heli" you knew you were going to be part of the blackhawk crew or "Spec ops" you'd be in the enemy base destroying commander assets and stealing vehicles. If a squad member wasn't playing along you'd just kick them from the squad and if need be, lock it temporarily to prevent them rejoining.
Allowing squad leaders more control and customisation over their squads is what drove a good squad experience without forcing anyone to play a certain way or penalising them for not if they didn't want to.
