The death of pre-order!

It is not just Battlefield 2042 that released too so much hype and fanfare,  Many other games by other companies have been thrust upon the players with little regard to quality and little respect for the fans that play them.  Fallout 76, Cyberpunk 2077 and Anthem are just a few examples.  Companies now do not even bother to send prerelease copies to game reviewers prior to launch because they know that the game is not ready.  Yet fans still queue up to preorder or buy on launch day.  This only encourages the companies to continue bad business practices and deliver substandard products.

Long ago I. quit preordering.  The promise of a unique gun, skin or item of apparel does not compensate me for the hours of agony, wasted time and frustration while the company scrambles to make the game work and repeatedly pretends to offer apologies and excuses why the game is not ready.  This practice only teaches players to distrust the companies entirely and to become "toxic" when venting their frustration on forums, Youtube, and the like.   In the years to come as gamers get older and teach their children about gaming, they will not have forgotten the corporate shenanigans that have created this "toxic" legacy.

It is only when fans refuse to purchase an unfinished non-reviewed game that this horrid practice will change.  You can help be part of that change.

  • @BGHFlakjacket I haven't pre-ordered anything since Hardline. I bought this for the week of early access and the season pass bundles, and oh man I have been disappointed. The lack of "legacy" features is killing me
  • Coincidentally it was Battlefield 4 that ended my pre-order habit for any and every game.

Once upon a time, pre order just guaranteed the disc on launch day and that was it, fair enough when only physical copies were involved.

With digital though comes the 'free stuff' and that can be an attractive proposition for many people.

As long as 'free stuff' is offered, pre order will continue.

I learned my lesson in 2013 with BF4.

That was the last BF I actually bought before or on day 1, no regrets so far. BF4 turned out to be a solid production, not the best but a solid modern combat experience.

I purchased BF2042 for -50% and somewhat the feeling of regret is real.

The best approach is to see initial gameplay, check the reviews, and what old player base "dinosaurs of the series" and "toxic" Reddit's subpage has to say 🙂
