VPNs need to be moderated at minimum
Correct me if my understanding is wrong:
1. A VPN allows you to spoof your location and connect to out of region servers, including 2042.
2. 2042 (and possibly other games) use network balancing / compensation to try and provide all players a similar connection to the game. So a player with a worse ping will get a slightly better ping, and low ping players will get a slightly worse ping. I’m not going to pretend how badly that’s worked, but that’s a different topic.
3. Since a VPN is only spoofing the location, the physical ping is not different to that PC. So the compensation then would stop at the VPN location and not include the additional distance of the player / user.
If those statements are correct, and the system is working as intended, then how can the compensation ever work? We know the network connection runs as a jagged line as it’s constantly trying to balance for all the different pings. Local pings will run about 29 and to an immediate adjacent region it’s 79. I play on the west coast, and sometimes get matched into central US servers. For the last 15 years I’ve had either a 27 ping or a 79 ping. In 2042, with the network graphs turned on, I can see that my 27 ping has an average latency of anywhere from 32 up to 105. Anything above 50 gets hard to hit anything, anything above 60 is basically unplayable. I used to play just fine at 79, just a bit of lag that o could get used to. Assuming compensation is splitting the difference, how many 90+ pings are needed to give an ALAT of 60. If VPNs are not recognized, how would that affect the compensation? I think it’s a major reason why AOW has felt broken since day one. I’d appreciate any feedback from you more technically inclined folks out there. I know players use them as the game is pretty dead in their region and they deserve to play the game they bought. I support those players, doesn’t change the fact that it is likely negatively affecting the entire game for everyone else.
