What is the point of Soflam?

Really, what's the point if you still have to get an AA lock on before firing and it can be flared away even through the Soflam lock?

Or am I missing something here?

  • I use it only when i'm sniping - it spots enemies, while also indicating their distance from you. Also always soflam vehicles i encounter, which allows teammates to lock onto them with recoiless M5

@A_al_K_pacino_A It’s been buggy with lock on, tiny branches are enough to break lock. Desync is also an issue, you think you’re aiming at something but you’re not really, as you’re half a second behind. Big shock, something in 2042 is busted…

@Echo6Echo The SOFLAM only allows you to lock on with the RPG and allows to lock onto ground Vehicles with the SAMs. What is different is, that you still need a line of sight to the target marked, and the SAMs ignore the SOFLAM marks on air vehicles.

So this works different than the BF4 SOFLAM and PLD where you could lock on a target designation, shoot in the air and the rocket found its target from the in the air position.

And I am not sure, do BF2042 rockets do more damage to laser designated targets, like they do in BF4?

@Echo6Echo Exactly, why does a missile being guided by a laser get flared away? Flares should have no effect on a soflam lock!

Some vehicles have dedicated laser guided weapons than can only operate with the use of external designations a la SOFLAM - They're usually way more powerful and result in what's normally a 1HK on air vehicles and at least a crippling shot on tanks.

I unlocked T1 in about 6 or 7 rounds of Breakthrough so it's definitely got potential, but I think I only ever got 7 or so vehicle destroy assists in that time so if nobody else wants to help you, it can appear rather useless. Needing to lock on to an already designated target sounds weird but I think things would get pretty janked and broken if you could just blind fire and obtain an auto lock.

I think in older titles, maybe it was 3 or 4, if you maintained your lock via SOFLAM and you were flared, the rockets would fly in circles and wait to re-obtain the lock (basically guaranteeing a kill for someone).

Solflam + Anti tank wildcat missile = ohk on aircraft that are not transports and 2 hit kill on trnasports

  • SOFLAM is so you can stare into the sky for some time until the enemy sneaks up on you and takes you out.
