Why were the stock maps designed the way they were?*EDIT*

**EDIT** Just played the redesigns

imo this game had so much potential to beat CoD or at least be an even better competitor. Also imo the map design is what killed this game.

Never mind the bugs, lack of attention to detail compared to BF1&5, and performance.

When I played the beta the objectives were so far apart due to the lack of flags (and/or design) on such a large map even though there were 128 players and there wasn't enough cover. Even more far apart than in BF2(2005) and BF2142(2006). I think one of the maps from the Armored Kill DLC in BF3 had just about as many flags as BF2042's stock 64vs64 maps and that's 32vs32. The maps are even bigger in 2042 and there's twice the player count so why weren't there more flags/bases or have the current design from beginning? Daqing oil fields in BF2(2005) had 8 flags. 😕

Even on the largest stock map in BF2142(2006) it takes nowhere near as long to go from one flag to the nearest other flag on foot before the reworks. Maybe on Highway Tampa it takes a little longer than what most people would like? Still nowhere near as long as BF2042's stock maps before the reworks.

Note: I just bought the game last week so I'm guessing the maps might play out differently with the redesigns? I'm just sorely disappointed that this game doesn't have 200,000+ concurrent players on Steam on a regular basis and I don't want to see Battlefield die.

  • @AOD_Reclusive918 it is believed that the original game was not a true BF game and was more oriented towards BR and HZ, so the original maps would be better suited for those modes.
  • So I checked out the map reworks.

My question is why weren't the maps like this from the beginning? I guarantee BF2042 would have more players if the maps were made more properly from the beginning like they are now.

  • @AOD_Reclusive918 Maybe the best post I've seen on these boards.

Map design imo is the most crucial element to a good shooter or Battlefield game. I've been saying it repeatedly, these maps don't have enough flags, and they don't play like large maps of the past. 128 players is too much on these maps.

And putting two flags in the same building or right across the street from each other doesn't count lol. These "clusters" they tried to create has done nothing but focus most of the 128 players into small chunks of the maps.

As added examples, large conquest maps from Battlefield 4:
    - Golmud Railway - 7 flags
    - Silk Road - 7 flags
    - Dragon Valley 2015 - 8 flags
    - Giants of Karellia - 7 flags

@AOD_Reclusive918Overall I agree it would be better. Orbital and Breakaway I could see as the standout maps.

But clearly the design of Exposure, Stranded, and Spearhead show another level of map design that really is missing in the entire launch set. So I'd probably ask why were we not getting maps of the same quality of Exposure, Stranded, and Spearhead at launch?
