@Flavin913Different strokes for different folks I guess. I enjoyed BFV for the most part but did have quite a few issues with it originally, such as the poor visibility and the endless animations etc. Mostly though I just enjoy BF1 and BF4 more and will play those much more frequently than BFV (I also only fly in V too).I must admit I enjoyed all three, BFV / BF1 and BF4.
Personally I loved the 4 Pacific maps in BFV they were definitely the highlight for me.
One of the negatives for me in BFV was the introduction of the elites some like Wilhelm were a bit cheesy, he looked like he had just walked off the stage in Phantom of the Opera. 🙂
The whole trench warfare setting in BF1 was really well done and they captured that era really well imho.
Really enjoyed BF4 / 3 and all the earlier ones too.
I wish I had a pound for every hour I have spent on the BF franchise, I would be a very rich man indeed. 😃
@RayD_O1 Same here. I think a lot of us would love to have a pound for every hour!
The elites were a bit of an issue too as some of them, like Wilhelm and Hannah, were very cartoony. Not forgetting Captain Bird's-eye either of course. I think they were going in the right direction with the Pacific and it's a bit of a shame that we didn't get an Eastern Front, that would have been good in theory too.
The trench warfare and the whole atmosphere of BF1 is, I think why I enjoy it so much and I'd agree that Dice did a really good job of capturing that.
I didn't like BFV at first because of the whole WW2 setting but technically speaking it's a very good game because the graphics are stunning when maxxed out, the gunplay is super sharp, the flying is spot on for the most part, the other vehicles are well balanced, the maps are perfectly sized and it has all the features you'd expect in a BF game. Yes it could have done with more content and finishing off properly and yes it is missing a few things but nevertheless it's still more feature and mechanic packed than 2042. BFV could be the last true BF game because it has none of this new age nonsense like cross play, forced matchmaking, specialists etc etc etc Personally I'm still happy now playing BFV for the foreseeable future.
I also didn't like BF1 at first because of the setting but I did start to warm up to it again because it's 100x the game 2042 is. When I hit level 500 in BFV I'll probably get back into BF1.
BF1 was imo the last BF game where the Devs really seemed to care about the game completely, they understood the assignment and absolutely smashed it, they tried some controversial things with BFV like SBMM and the whole TTK rubbish but the community pretty much made them revert it all because no one wanted it. Sadly 2042 kicked off right away with an absolute ton of things that no one wanted so it was doomed from the start, they clearly decided to take the franchise in a new direction completely ignoring the tried and tested user feedback generated core BF game and it has completely backfired on them.
Will 2042 ever be 'fixed' enough to be a true BF game? imo no because it's core is too far off script to be fixed. Will the next BF return to the classic format everyone liked? Maybe, but if it isn't then the franchise may as well just be shut down.
For these reasons BFV will always have a strong following IMO.
@DuaneDibbley wrote:BF5 was not a very good game. Especially not a the beginning. But it had at least the essential core features (the ones they call 'legacy' now). So yes, BF5 had a rough start, but it was still Battlefield and except of the TTK debacle the core features were always where they supposed to be.
It also has some problem with map design. Just one example: Fjell 652. A very good infantry map -- completely ruined by the addition of planes. Without planes, this is really fun and I think that most players (all except of the pilots) will agree that the person that made the decision to add 5? planes PER SIDE! to this infantry map should -- if not fired right away -- be at least NOT allowed to EVER be involved with those kind of tasks ever again.
But compared to BF2042, BF5 it is so much better that we now play BF5 again while waiting for the current installment to get the required fixes to make it enjoyable. Arras, Marita, Mercury (sometimes also ruined by planes, but not as much as Fjell), Devastation, Solomon Islands, ... ALL much more beautiful maps and all with better flow and in general better map design.
AND (for us maybe even the most important part): we can play together on the same server (takes some minutes to join, but then we can stay until the first cheater joins and ruins our fun). In BF2042 we have to split in 2 (or even 3, if we are more than 8 people) groups. This needs to be addressed with highest prio if you ask me (which you don't). But this is something for another thread.
Oh no the dreaded Fjell map I remember it well, and you are quite right it was ruined by the addition of planes.
If I recall correctly the forums then were full of players asking for the planes to be removed as the infantry farming on Fjell was quite diabolical. As you say it had some beautiful maps too.
Most importantly it had all the core features expected to be in a BF game.

BFV has a few cardinal sins.
1) It is an incomplete abandoned game
2) It is full of cheaters
3) It does not support permanent community servers (which is also a problem in 2042)

1) Correct today, but it was supported for longer than BF2042 ever will be.
2) Yes, as well as BF2042 and almost all other multiplayer titles. We now know, that there are currently less cheaters in BF2042, but at least one cheat vendor discontinued the offer because of BF2042 being to broken. And until we get scoreboard and the kill log is fixed to show all kills in the server as well), we cannot see the current cheaters that clearly with 122:2 as infantry players-
3) Sadly yes, and I personally doubt that this feature will come for BF2042. Let's wait and see.

Ah good old Captain Birds -eye, there was definitely something fishy about that guy. !!
Yeah I agree with you an Eastern Front could have been epic.
Definitely the BF1 atmosphere was the closest any of the BF's have come to creating that sense of actually being there.
Maps like River Somme (from Apocalypse DLC) made me realise what it must have been like for the soldiers stuck in those claustrophobic trenches in all weathers.

@Flavin913 I really love the character customization system of BFV.
Choice of female and male models, different origins, and a wide variety of camouflage suits, for different terrain types, and factions.
Not a big fan of the legendary characters though, and some of the epic skins were pretty stupid.Comparing this, makes BF2042 a punch in the face.
I really hated the class / weapon type limitations. Originally the combat roles were supposed to improve on it, like a close quarter recon, but that these were dropped, didn't help.
Attrition was a cool idea, and it would have been even better, if they would have stayed with the Alpha/Beta implementation.
Being a WW2 game, the only reason to play it was, that it was a Battlefield game, and that my community was looking forward to it.
But yeah, that didn't went well without a rentable server program and no community games at launch.Announcing that they pulled the development resources for a new Battlefield game, made me stop playing that very moment, since there still were so many unresolved issues.
Seeing how they used these resources doesn't make me especially happy, and I start to believe they would have better use in improving the BFV.
With 1000 hours in the game, I don't think I hate it per se, I did hate the lack of commitment to stick to promises made at launch, and only limited resources spend on the title.
Now it appears as history might repeat itself.
I really couldn't get into BF1 & V. I think at that point I was tired of World War games.

For all who remember, BFV underwent asinine TTK changes several times on its life cycle. That was worse than anything they did with 2042 so far.

Out side of crashes my only gripe with BFV at launch was the ammo/health crates not showing on the maps when they got dropped.
i don't know if i would have liked it or not, soderland told people "don't like it don't buy it" so i didn't.
i didn't have an issue with women being in bf5 i just didn't like his sh*t attitude, his hubris is what p***ed me off.
If I'm going to be honest, this is what really led my decision to pass on BFV.
Their decision to focus on what was otherwise a small minority of people who actually were making threats, had an issue with women, etc. which was then turned on anyone having an issue with some of the less authentic elements.
I don't have a problem with women in the game and there are plenty of interesting, brave examples they could have used in history that wouldn't have felt cringe-worthy like that made up, bionic, super-like hero character they tried to portray.
Their focus on a few egregious examples of the community cast a bad light on all with valid criticism of some of these elements. The "don't buy it" remark was the last straw for me.
Another reason I passed was that I was done with WW2 shooters by that time. Had they tried to make it more authentic feeling and gritty then that might have been a different story vs the action hero/movie vibe. BF1 had that feeling to me and is one reason I bought it even though the setting wasn't appealing.
