"Game Session Ended" when Xbox friend tries to join my party on PC

I recently switched to PC from Xbox.  My friend that I play with tries to join me in game and says he can't and gets an error that says something like "Game session ended".   But I can join his part...

Another forum member said they were able to fix it by both him and his friend unfriending and refriending each other.

It seemed like all the game invites were being sent to his Xbox instead of his PC.
