Keybinds Reset After Update

I just updated BF:2042 to the new update and joined a Conquest server.  All of my keybinds that I spent a long time customizing were reset to default.  I attempted to pull from my nightly backups the following file:
C:\Users\<YOUR USER NAME>\Documents\Battlefield 2042\settings\PROFSAVE_profile

and compare it to what was currently there but there were no differences.

Where are the keybinds stored now?  How can I revert them from an old config file rather than setting them all up manually again?

Why can't these updates preserve any customizations to configurations?

  • I was able to launch the game again and this time it updated my local PROFSAVE_profile.

I copied every line from my old PROFSAVE_profile config (from my previous night's backup) that started with "GstKeyBinding" and then opened the new PROFSAVE_profile file and selected all lines that started with "GstKeyBinding" and pasted over everything, and that fixed most of them. Still had to change my binds for most helicopter / jet binds - but this saved a lot of time. I'm NOT a WASD guy so I had a lot to change. Backup your PROFSAVE_profile file before upgrading if you care about this stuff.

I went back to 13th of april , what am I doing  wrong ?

After only restroring the "PROFSAVE_profile: and NOT PROSAFE it seems to work now.

I really hope DICE changes how they handle keybinding in the future.  Every BF game has been horrific for people that don't play with the "standard" WASD format.  At the very least, offer EDSF players an alternate binding solution (similar to how you can find "southpaw" bindings for controllers in most games)

I shouldn't have to fight with binding an action to a different key and then hunting down every other action that was using that key and remove it.  It's an utter mess.

Add me to the list of people who got screwed by the update.  Hell if I'm gonna go through that nightmare of setting up EVERY KEYBIND again!  Just rookie league garbage.  How about you warn us that we are going to screw you over with this update and although its not normal by any other game - you should hunt down where we hid your keybindings and back that file up and then do a '>dif' command to find where you can begin to cut and paste for the next hour.

    Just garbage beyond belief.....

Oh and dont ever say "It wont happen again" if you work for EA and/or DICE!!!!

Fxck off, happened to me again today. Dice, your coders are just some bunch of *. Why can't you save the keybinds on the cloud? Why? Is it just so hard? You save them locally means if I swich to a new machine, I have to set all these up again? What a stupid mechanism.

Hey, Cristopher! Thank you for the idea! I too encountered such a problem after reinstalling Windows. Thinking I got it all covered with a backup, but could only restore things like audio/graphics/etc, anything but not keybindings.

Just in case I've made a backup of original profsave_profile after fresh BF install and noticed something interesting: there were no keybinds, just GstRender, GstAudio and so on.

So it got me thinking that I need to change a couple of keybinds first - and I was right, after that all GstKeyBindings appeared, but I don't think it mattered.

Anyways, just like you said I've selected everything in my old file and replaced in the new created. For some reason fresh BF didn't like files that were created by "another" BF.

TLDR to apply your old settings from a backup if you reinstalled WIndows and/or BF2042:

    1) do not simply replace PROFSAVE_profile! if you did, then you should probably delete it, launch BF2042 and it will generate a new default one;

    2) open your backup PROFSAVE_profile (Notepad will do), select everything and copy it to the default one.

  • This is on the older side of time, I'm closing this thread to stop it from being necroed.

If you have any issues with Battlefield 2042 please make a new topic about your problems and what kind of steps you have tried to solve them.
