[PC] EAAntiCheat loading causes BF2042 to freeze or entire machine to restart

I have had an incredible number of problems with BF2042 going back months. EA Overlay, steam overlay, registry edits, attempted GPU tuning changes...it has been incredibly frustrating.

When I first got the game, I couldn't even load the game without it crashing with directx issues. Running registry edits for mpo fixed issues for months.

Now, my game/system have been crashing with no errors dialog boxes. It seems to be incredibly inconsistent. Some days, I can play for a few hours. Other days, I can't even load in to games. I can play AI games for 30-45m without issue but usually BF2042 will crash eventually.

My issue seems to be tied to EA Anti Cheat with two specific error messages in the event viewer >> windows logs >> system:

File System Filter 'EAAntiCheat' (Version 10.0, ‎2024‎-‎08‎-‎22T16:15:06.000000000Z) unloaded successfully.

File System Filter 'EAAntiCheat' (10.0, ‎2024‎-‎08‎-‎22T16:15:06.000000000Z) has successfully loaded and registered with Filter Manager.

If both events occur then the game crashes. If only the second event occurs, then my system will crash. When I view the event viewer after a system crash, the second event is the last event to occur and it occurs less than a minute before the system shutdown. Every single time.

This has been occurring for the past several days. Prior to 8/22, my game would would still crash or system restart but perhaps once a night or so.

Honestly, I'm on the verge of throwing my PC through a window.

I have done the following:

  • uninstalled and reinstalled current and old versions of my AMD video card

  • pulled apart my pc tower, disconnected RAM and GPU and then reattached them

  • split power cables from my power unit to the GPU

  • enabled and disabled XMP profiles for my RAM

  • undervolt and overvolt GPU
  • updated system bios

  • run a clean boot with only windows services, manually starting EA and Steam
  • repaired windows

  • system restore to last week

  • reset windows and kept applications

  • reinstalled windows with a freshly downloaded copy

  • repaired EA app

  • uninstalled and reinstalled EA app

  • repaired EA Anti Cheat

  • updated EA Anti Cheat

  • uninstalled and reinstalled EA Anti Cheat

  • run ea anti cheat as admin

  • run steam as admin

  • run BF2042 as admin

  • start BF2042 from steam

  • start BF2042 from EA App

  • deleted BF files in documents folder

  • deleted BF cache

  • verified integrity BF files in steam

  • turn off windows defender real time protection

  • add exclusions for ea anti cheat and bf2042 in windows defender

  • add exceptions for BF2042, EA, EA anti cheat in windows defender firewall

I would just like to play without my game crashing.

- Windows 11 Pro 23H2, OS build 22631.4037

- 13th Gen Intel i7-13700KF

- AMD Radeon RX 6900XT --- 24.8.1 driver

- Corsair RMx Series 850x

  • I have a 12th gen i9. I wonder if it could be causing the same issue for me because I have noticed my temps spike on BF 2042 and only BF 2042 but I consistently blue screen every time I play 2042 and the windows crash log is not very helpful

  • I went back through and did several things after reinstalling Windows on my PC:

    - made sure to disable EA overlay AND AMD Adrenaline overlay

    - undervolt my GPU, increase power to my GPU by 15%

    - Change display settings to borderless

One of those three seems to have fixed the issue. For the last two days, I was able to play for a few hours with little to no crashes. I believe it was one of the overlays. I am not sure what caused my crashes before reinstalling windows as those were things that I had turned off months ago.

However, now I've received a brand new present this evening - my account has been banned for cheating.

I am not sure what may have caused that other than reinstalling/repairing the EA anti cheat multiple times over the past several days.

It's a shame that I finally got BF working properly and now I am banned. I've been unable to dispute the ban as the support case goes in to a pending status and I am unable to resume. The case simply states that it will autoclose if it is not resumed.

I'm not sure what to do. I spent a dozen hours over several days trying to get the game working again only to be falsely banned after getting it working.

  • Yep, I’ve already done that. I got an auto response that it was declined linking me to the ToS.

i have received no evidence of what triggered the ban.

the only thing I can think is that uninstalling/reinstalling the anti cheat or attempting to repair it caused something to happen.
