  • The primary reason why the ping on your hosted server is high could be due to someone from another region joining your empty server as the first person. This issue is typically observed in empty persistent servers.

The reason for this problem is that DICE, the one who supposes to host your server, does not host it "persistently". Instead, the system creates a new server session every time someone joins an empty server. Even though your server is visible in the Portal browser, it is just a template and does not actually "exist" until the first player joins in.

In BF2042, the server ID is called blazeid or BlazeGameID, for example blazeid = 28938227040086 which changes every time the server goes empty.

The problem with this approach is that the system creates the server in the region that matches the first player's location, not yours. As a result, when you join the server, you will naturally experience high ping.

The solution to this issue is to restart the server. It is also important to take good care of your server in the future to avoid similar problems.

  • @Tarzain12 Thanks for the response, but this is not the issue I'm describing. I host servers everyday in EU/US and know how they work. It seems that sometimes the system is misallocating servers to wrong player location, which never happened to me before. That ping is indicative of the server being hosted on US WEST.
  • I just spun up a server from xbox, no vpn, location Europe. As you can see in attached screenshot, an EU server pings at 61ms, but my server is pinging 120ms. Upon inspection (screenshot2), we can see the server has spun up in Asia.

  • Did you experience high ping right after starting the server?

This may not be relevant but it doesn't hurt to check your account region as well, just to be on the safe side.

  • @Tarzain12 I have 2 game licenses, one on pc, one on xbox. So as soon as I spun up the server on xbox, I refreshed the portal server browser on pc and saw this 122ms ping. I then shutdown server, booted it up again using exact same process, and this time was in EU with 56ms ping. It doesn't happen every time, maybe 1 in 3 times. Also I don't know if this affects persistent servers. For example, if my persistent server has 0 people on it and is sitting on 56ms ping, when a player in lets say New York joins, is it correctly allocating a server in US data centre, or is it spinning up in Asia maybe. Will need to test further to see if this is the case.
