Recon, sniping. Glare.

Since we're now moving from a spawn-in-place recon class having moved the beacon to assault.. I think its time we removed glare, or limited it's visibility more.

Snipers now have to manually move around the map, and some players who have been sniping since the beginning of BF should be able to immerse ourselves in the role of a sniper once again.

My only worry is now that snipers are more vulnerable, the glare is just a massive giveaway. After carefully traversing the map to find an ideal location to spot/snipe/give info you cant even look through the scope before the whole world knows your location? It's a bit silly.

Ideally it's removed, but as an alternative, maybe adding the binocular gadget back and only through that - a glint can be seen. This gives options to players on the frontline, and to recons looking to counter snipe.

I feel like removal of the glare also removes distraction for a lot of front-line players, I know myself to instinctually find cover the moment I see the glint, regardless of class. This isnt really realistic, nor does it actually add anything to the gameplay.

Any thoughts? I'd love to hear what people think about the recon changes.

I think scope glint should be toned down a little. But they bring back sweet spot mechanic from Battlefield 1 so at least we got something.

Sweet spot is nice for sure, but thats a mid-range enhancement, aimed at riflers mostly. I just hope snipers get a little bit of love, instead what feels like a major downgrade currently. It's not like I disagree with the beacon being moved either, i like it. I've always wanted a more realistic sniping playstyle, but glints being the way they are in recent titles make that impossible.

I wrote a pretty lengthy discussion on the glare problem as well, as well as some suggested changes for balancing.  Needless to say, I agree wholeheartedly.

I don't play much recon but ill chip in on the glare being crazy strong currently. Looking up at a popular sniper spot just looks silly because all you see is 7 bright stars shining back at you. I like what you guys type with bringing back the binoculars and removing or toning the glint down a lot.

Bring back Battlefield 4 scope glint. In Battlefield 4, scope glare (or scope glint) is visible when aiming down sights with scopes of 6x magnification and above, and it is only noticeable within a 10-degree angle of the enemy's line of sight.

  • I been into several conversations on that issue and I would prefer the glint gone (auto spot makes it unnecessary for counter sniping anyway) so long as you are not getting hit by the sun. It would promote snipers to move more and stop camping on the highest point of the map looking for and advantageous position unless you wish to be the most popular player on the game (in which case you have my blessing). With the glint gone, snipers would be more concerned on finding more tactical positions (intel, flank, flush, or assassinate key players, will vary on each battle experience)

Personally I feel that it would give the recon class a more active role and your squad will fill the difference (keep getting sniped) in the game cause that glint makes it really hard to not sit back and camp (for those who enjoy the bolt action rifle)

Was it actually this well-tuned? I havent played bf4 in a hot minute, but its my most played by far (3k hours+) and I have fond memories of sniping in that game. Didn't realize they actually implemented a feature that made it only visible within a certain angle though, that's totally fair (and something ive already asked to see in bf6) and honestly necessary if they want to keep even close to the current state of scope glint.

Another issue I feel is that it seems that no matter what scope you have on a sniper, the glint is present.  Definitely a higher magnification of 4x and up, but under? come on. You can basically snipe with a shotgun using a 2x and no glare, but you cant snipe with a.. sniper using holo-sight without it? seems ludicrous. I dearly hope they solve it, its not like the maps are smaller than bf4 either (if anything they are bigger and less feature-rich without levolution!)

Yeah, I feel like glint isnt really needed anymore. It was increasingly necessary as we scaled up the maps but weve hit an equilibrium here with a cap of 64 players (like bf4, which had far less restrictions on sniping). Plus the fact that spawn beacons wont be available for recon anyway? What does it matter if one guy gets 10 kills from some remote rooftop, one kill and he has to move back manually. It just feels like a balance and more like the devs have some personal disdain for sniping in a franchise that made every class feel impactful. Now its just call of duty rush the point style gameplay, theres a time for both and recon shouldnt be forced to run commando.

    Crazy thought:
What if they made the glint appear only when spotted? I feel like thats the best of both worlds now that I think about it, in many ways it instantly makes recon actually want to remain hidden (instead of peeking every second) by forcing smart players to take cover until no longer spotted and reposition with smokes and what not. That, coupled with a limit to glare/glint on lower magnification and you can basically assume what scope the sniper is using as well. Seems somewhat more balanced than what we've got now at least.
