A difficult but forced decision: No BF6 purchase for me...
Hey folks,
I've been a Battlefield player since the early days, and like many of you, I have an immense amount of love and nostalgia for games like BF3 and BF4 (peak battlefield!). The scale, the destruction, the teamwork—it was a truly special experience that kept me coming back for years. I'm in my late 30s now, and while my gaming habits have changed, my passion for the franchise has always remained.
However, after a lot of thought, I've come to the tough decision that I won't be buying Battlefield 6, because I simply won't be able to play it.
Lately, I've grown increasingly tired of some of the decisions being made by major software companies. I'm talking about things like the constant advertising and data collection in Windows, the "heavy" and sluggish feeling of my system, the forced Microsoft account sign-in, and the general feeling that I'm not in control of my own system anymore. It's a sentiment I've seen echoed by many people online, and for me, it was the final straw.
After years on Windows, I made the switch to Arch Linux. While it was initially a challenge (I'm quite technically proficient though!), the experience has been fantastic. I have control over my system, and the performance and stability are exactly what I was looking for. Yes, I lost access to some great games like Destiny 2 (played this with my step dad) which was frustrating, but I've discovered a new world of great games that support Linux, either natively or through Proton. I've been having a blast with titles like Warframe, Enshrouded, Valheim, Monster hunter Wilds and Expedition 33.
And that's where my disappointment with DICE comes in. It's truly a letdown that a company I've supported for so long, and a franchise I've loved for so many years, doesn't seem to care about supporting the growing number of players who have made the move to Linux. The gaming landscape is changing (Thanks unix devs, valve, and others!), and it feels like DICE and EA are being left behind by not embracing it.
I'm a loyal fan, but this is a line I can't cross. I hope that in the future, the Battlefield franchise will change its stance and open its doors to all players, regardless of their OS. Until then, I'll be cheering for the franchise from the sidelines, but I won't be buying the game.
