I genuinely feel like the Battlefield franchise is cursed by EA. The truth is, Battlefield's push toward esports had been moving forward in a fairly orderly way all along — BF4's dedicated small competitive maps built for 5v5, 6v6 and 8v8; Hardline's fixed medpack and ammo crate spawns at set points on the map (carried over into BFV); Hardline's catapult-slow fire rates and steep damage falloff; BFV's conversion of spread into random recoil, which made it impossible for players to fully control a weapon when sustained-firing at distant targets; and 2042 abandoning classes in favor of a hero/Specialist system (R6-siege), which should have been better for balancing and for esports.

But EA's pressure and DICE's foot-dragging — combined with the new DICE's unfamiliarity with the Frostbite engine — produced 2042's disastrous launch. The classic evidence is all there: very few maps at release, optimization problems, vehicle bugs, hitbox issues, the jarring hipfire-to-ADS FOV transition (the ADS problem), and the impact of random recoil on low-tick-rate servers.

Even though BF6's beta did its best to steer clear of the problems of previous entries, Apex Legends' dazzling performance and EA's waning patience with DICE have pushed EA to demand that DICE use a battle royale to bring in new players, build out its esports ambitions around those new players, and abandon Battlefield esports as it used to be. Today's BR and the old BF esports are two completely different games. And this free-to-play BR has in turn rendered the original BFLab essentially pointless. If the BR actually succeeds, then Battlefield's gunplay may very well end up bending to accommodate it.
