re-implementing the horrible random recoil and deviation mechanic?
Could I ask you why you found it horrible?
I’ve been repeating myself a bit on this topic, but: the random recoil was just bloom that was visible. Instead of your aim remaining steady and your shot going somewhere else, now your aim jumped where your shot went. I felt it was a straight upgrade on bloom, frankly, with the only tradeoff being your sight jumping a bit more (made worst by the fact they increased visual recoil in the same update, admittedly, and I’m wondering if people would have been more acceptant if they hadn’t done that).
because the last patch they dramatically increased random recoil and weapon deviation which made the gunplay, well, RANDOM.
On top of that they did some god awerful thing to netcode which made it the worse it has ever been but then fixed the netcode this patch.
This patch is a step in the right direction, however there still is a level of random recoil which i would rather see removed from the game in favor for more actual weapon recoil along with visiual recoil.
I think what they are trying to achieve with random recoil is better simulating real weapon spread created via weapons recoil but this is failing dramatically.
I think they just need to remove random recoil or anything that adds randomization in favor for much heavier recoil which will naturally add "Spread" depending on player skills.
I've actually used the kirss vector in real life (Kv9 as it is in bf6) as well aks m16s and its the actual weapon recoil that can largely dictate where a bullet (S) go along with actual weather conditions eg wind but i think that would be too complicated to factor for in this game.
So probably best practice moving forward which probably won't happen is
remove random recoil/weapon deviation as a whole in favor for high overall actual weapon recoil and visual recoil and increased weapon sway.
I think they should also reduce the base muzzle velocity or if not reduce base weapon damage to slow time to kill but again requires massive amounts of rebalancing so won't happen.
i think what we've got now in terms of gunplay is as close to good as bf6 will ever be

Sure, but then for that patch, they added the read on recoil to the existing bloom (I believe, there’s alas very little details on the actual implementation).
Perhaps to put it differently, if they implemented random recoil to reach the same bloom values you get now, and replaced one by the other, would that still be bad for you? I’m asking because I genuinely feel random recoil is an upgrade on bloom while doing exactly the same thing, and I keep thinking it was poorly received mostly because DICE never communicated clearly on what they were trying to achieve.

I’ve never fired an automatic weapon but I’ve had quite a few fired next to me, including at full bursts. Best I can tell, those things do indeed jump all over the place (admittedly the people doing the firing weren’t necessarily the best of marksmen). But I’d say the element missing is bullet arcs: it’d be a real differentiator for efficiency over distance.
But just like you say for wind factors and others, it’d probably be too complicated for this game.

What bothers me here is that it creates a very narrow meta, even if only truly useful for top players: if there is no randomization and is fully controllable, albeit with skill, then a couple of weapons with great stats balanced around imprecision (so heavy recoil in this system) will rise to the top.
When removing randomization, you’re also removing one factor used for balancing. Which is fine when you have a small number of weapons, but in BF6, we’re already seeing new weapons that are similar to something that came before because there’s no place left.
Anyways, thanks for the detailed post.
