They probably will never admit to it, but I think someone with a lot of sway in EA or Dice gave sometime akin to an ultimatum to either give devs more time to fix or watch the studio fail.
OR, someone who actually knows something about what players want saw the release version and dragged it to a stop and told them to fix it or else.
Honestly, I think it's a great thing they are taking more time. The current content has a lot of issues, and the delay gives me some hope they actually care to try and work on the game properly.
