EA/DICE are using PC players as console lobby filler

NOTE: This is not an anti console post. This is an anti cross-play post and a criticism of EA/DICE decisions and design re. match-making.

Having experienced quite a few PC cross-play OFF lobbies now it's becoming clear that the match-making system prefers to put PC players into console lobbies than PC lobbies.

I've swapped back and forth at various times of day and asked in chat who is cross-play on or off and to me it seems that PC players are being used to fill console lobbies as a priority over PC cross-play off lobbies, ie. If you play cross-play on you get lobbies full of real players. If you play cross-play off you get bots, sometimes the whole lobby, even moments after leaving a fully non-bot lobby.

As if not giving the option to opt out of cross-play for PC players wasn't obvious enough insulting console bias, it would seem it goes further such that when PC players manage to work out how to avoid cross-play, they are left in lobbies full of bots even when there are thousands of PC players available.

NOTE 2: It may well be that console players that turn cross-play off also struggle to get non-bot lobbies as perhaps the match-making simply favours cross-play on players rather than trying to fill the lobbies of those that actually have a preference. I would not be surprised if EA/DICE are not biased, but are incompetent in this regard and are serving neither side well.

Either way, it would seem that cross-play and match-making is fundamentally flawed as far as player preference is concerned. It is working to make things easier for EA/DICE, not better for the players.

NOTE 3: And let's not forget that it seems having cross-play on is a large contributor to the gunplay problems experienced: If you turn off cross-play the incidents of "wtf" moments almost disappear.

Any comment from EA/DICE? Nope. Nothing. My suspicion is they know how terrible it is and don't want to go on record until they have something less embarrassing to say about it.

  • I think people with crossplay on use a different matchmaking to people with crossplay off.

So when you turn it off all those with it turned on are excluded from your matchmaking search.

Thats why when you turn crossplay off on pc you get bot lobbies because it isn't including crossplay on players regardless of platform.

When an xbox player disables crossplay it only searches for other xbox players with crossplay turned off, same with pc, turn crossplay off and it only searches for other pc players with it turned off.

You can take the tinfoil hat off now.

No it doesn't work that way. I asked around in my testing.

There are plenty of people who have cross-play ON who turn up in match-making with people with cross-play OFF.

I'm on PS5 with crossplay off and I've not seen a single PC player.

Lol. Who else would I ask except the people actually in the game lobby with me?

Why do you ask? Are you implying they lied? Why would they?

You said you got put in lobbies full of bots with crossplay off.

Did the bots have crossplay enabled?

As I said: "If you play cross-play off you get bots, sometimes the whole lobby"

They weren't always completely full with bots. Sometimes they had some humans. Those folks I asked. They sometimes said they were cross-play on.

  • Dude, wtf is bots, I can't believe people coped so hard and bullied themselves into a accepting the fact that lobbies filled with fake players is okay experience.

  • I agree with the OP. Just got out of a breakthough game. Enemy team had 2 PC players, My team had 6 PC players. The rest were console players. Seeing more and more games where console players outnumber the PC players and it sucks.

EA/DICE has really made a huge mistake by putting console players as a priority.  PC players are the roots of this franchise.  Awful to see the PC community dismissed like this.

The game has officially jumped the shark.
