Suggestion for game starting UI for all
The UI is terrible. We all know that. EA/DICE know that, but some marketing exec in there somewhere is friends with the CEO or something, so here we are.
I'm pretty sure they won't fix it, but here is my suggestion anyway in an attempt to explain that everyone can get everything they want and it still be a better UI/UX.
What we need is not a server browser. That is 'old tech' we can leave behind. We can achieve the same thing with something like the Custom Search if only that weren't uselessly over-simplified. Players demanding an old server browser has made it very easy for EA/DICE to ignore the community and carry on with a very unsophisticated front-end.
We need a function that lets you choose the criteria of what you want to play. Something like the Custom Search but much more flexible.
Some options would be: -
- Map(s)
- Map Rotation (ie. rotate through the map, don't choose at random)
- Attack/Defend
- Attack/Defend Rotation
- Ping Limit
- Region(s)
- Include Portal (yes, this could drop you into a Portal game)
- Allow bots
- Allow bot back-fill
- Cross-play platform ON/OFF
- Cross-play input device ON/OFF
- Allow in-progress matches
- Open/Closed Weapons
- Allow Portal
- Show verified experiences
- Show Clan Servers
- Server name
etc.
This would obviously require some extra coding from DICE. The system needs a memory (so it knows what you've played and can do the rotations). But this is per client, so the servers can still be spun up and spun down as needed.
And there would be two ways to play: After choosing criteria you press "Quick Match" or, if you allowed Portal, a "List Servers" button will be available.
Quick Match
Everyone gets what they want. Players with simple criteria will get the same experience as ever. They choose a mode. They get matchmade into a match.
Players with complex criteria should still get to play quickly because a server can be spun up to match their particular criteria and the teams will be filled with players that match the simple criteria like mode and map who don't care about the further criteria that someone else has chosen.
Players with very complex criteria, like Region, Cross-play opt outs, etc might have to wait for enough matching players, but that is their choice. They can add Allow bot back-fill if they want to get going quicker.
And, yes, it can drop you into a matching Portal server if the criteria match. This would be a great for giving exposure to community experiences.
List Servers
If you want to see what Portal servers match before choosing, you can click List Servers and go from there. There would be a Quick Match button still if you change your mind or just can't choose.
Hopefully this makes sense. As I say, I think this gives everyone what they want. You don't need a server browser since your choices exist as a set of criteria (which you could save and name).
Of course if you want to join a particular server (clan run, or whatever) you can search for that and join.
