Let me explain how it works in BF2142: When loading each match, any player who had passed a certain level (I don't remember exactly which) could apply for the role of commander. Once they obtained the role, that player was not part of any fireteam. Among their gadgets, they had a tablet from which they managed various functions, including: giving orders to the team leaders of each fireteam (mostly attack, defend, or monitor a specific area), launching missile strikes, supplies, UAVs, and counter-UAVs to disrupt the other commander's UAV. They did all this by stationing themselves, for strategic reasons, in their own headquarters, where all the weapons needed to launch support were installed (missile launchers, radars, radios, etc.) which could also be damaged and then repaired by an engineer or permanently destroyed. We are obviously talking about the CONQUEST game mode. The fireteam team leaders could also ask the commander for orders, requesting the launch of supplies, launching ground vehicles, UAVs, or missile launches. All these mechanics were rewarded with bonus points that were added to the total score that determined the final match standings, obviously only if the orders were respected.
Imagine having a coordinator directing the attack in a faction with more than three friends.
Yes but the thing is that STILL is limited to one player per team, is a totally different gameplay loop than everyone else, and as you point out has permanent losses meaning you can eventually end up quite literally useless.
So how is that really fun?

I disagree with your point. Battlefield needs a makeover. The commander role in modes like Escalation and Conquest is a role that diversifies and gives the game a strategic edge. Otherwise, it'll remain just another arcade FPS game without its own identity. Oh, there you go!!! Buildings get destroyed... blah blah blah

But the chaotic destruction, fast paced action, and massive combined arms battles are the like defining aspects of the game.
Having just one guy get to play with extra stuff isn't fun even if they play a wholly different loop. By design that's limiting and just not engaging as now instead of capping the point and holding it youre nailed by a cruise missile cause some dude got to press the "free kill" button. It is COOL sure yes conceptually, but in practice its just not that great.

The mechanic I'm talking about obviously wasn't always available. Every time you threw something, you had to wait a while before throwing it again. This time was shortened if the members of the various fireteams followed the orders. So, in addition to awarding extra points, they allowed for quicker use of various gadgets. However, I don't understand what you mean when you say that having only one player in the commander role isn't fun... Obviously, one commander per faction. Do you want to have multiple commanders per faction by any chance?
In any case, I recommend you go and catch up on some gameplay of BF 2142; a very old game but light-years ahead of modern games in terms of mechanics.
