Portal was in my opinion the best thing to come to battlefield.
in 2042, it was a game changer because we could easily pick a game mode template and adjust settings and even code the server with the rules editor.
it was easy to pick up and play with. The editor was also easy to use after a short period of learning how it works. It was possible make some really fun modes.
BF6 was to bring portal 2.0 and a lot of people were really excited. All the functionality of 2042’s portal but also with a full map editor via the Godot dev kit.
wow, things were looking awesome!
but sadly no.
we quickly found that we had far LESS than we did in 2042.
we can just host “verified” servers which are basically the portal “core” servers from 2042. Only this time with next to NO settings available to adjust in your experience.
In BF6 we also have NO custom game mode templates given to us - meaning we can no longer pick a custom game mode and adjust the additional settings we could in 2042.
In BF6, we now have to build and code an entire experience using Godot.
This means everything from the scoreboard, world icons, bot behaviour, objective locations, capture areas etc.
And you have to do this for every single map and mode you want to make.
You literally cannot quickly make a custom game mode and enjoy it. It takes days, weeks, months to get a fully functioning mode running.
Even the most talented guys on the portal discord are requiring a long time to trouble shoot bugs they encounter.
What on earth has dice done here.
No one is going to be encouraged to use portal now. Not many people have the time to sit at a PC for what could be weeks and months just to get a server running.
And now, just to really nail the lid on portal, they’ve removed all progression and achievements from portal servers.
i always made servers in 2042 to make cool, fun stuff. I spent 3+ years in portal and had some really cool experiences. I have 2500 hours in 2042, most of it in portal.
With BF6, I just can’t be bothered now. They’ve made it impossible to easily jump into portal and make stuff.
they’ve also removed a hell of a lot of settings from custom experiences.
can’t change the damage values of each weapon type for example like we could in 2042. This ability alone allowed us to make the game feel a lot more balanced.
can’t change HUD settings like we could in 2042.
so much is missing.
so now, we’re basically forced to jump into run and gun matchmaking servers that basically feel like cod.
spawn kill die spawn kill die spawn kill die.
weapons are seriously unbalanced, awful TTD, hit reg is bad, growing list of bugs, revive bug, loadout bugs, can’t choose map rotations, hard to squad up, cod slide can’t be removed, everyone’s running aim assist, short matches, micro sized maps etc.
there really isn’t much going for this game anymore. There is increasingly less to feel excited about.
they said everyone can run a server. Full XP. Yeah. Well basically they didn’t put the infrastructure in place to support that. And now they’ve removed all progression.
so it begs the question, why bother having portal in the game at all now?
people that need progression with portal and bots can no longer use it.
people that don’t have experience or degrees in coding can no longer make use of portal custom.
and the alternative now is sweaty matchmaking servers.
i cannot believe that in less than 2 weeks, dice has pretty much destroyed a lot of the appeal of this game.
large maps? Nope
squad up with friends easily? Nope
run servers? Nope
full XP in servers as advertised? Nope
make your own experiences easily? Nope
game fully working at launch? Nope
this is turning into a disaster.
Their latest "fix" just screwed the portal mode even more. Battlefield is officially dead. The devs and EA showed that they cannot learn from their mistakes. I had so much fun playing with friends on PVE before they took away what was advertised and promised. Now, I just uninstalled the game and moved on.
