The smokescreen in this game seems very inconsistent

I have lost count of the times that people that I cannot see, are able to know where I am at within the smokescreen. I suspect that the issue has something to with them seeing a different less dense...

I've noticed the opposite situation as well. Players that are inside smoke just shooting at me, while I can't even see them. I couldn't tell you what the underlying cause is though.
