100% agree. The M249 SAW has been a Battlefield staple since BF2 — it appeared in BF2, BC2, BF3, BF4, Hardline, and even BF Portal. Right now we only have the L110 as the closest equivalent, which doesn't carry the same identity.
But here's the angle I haven't seen mentioned: the M249 has one of the most distinctive distant sound signatures in any shooter. It's a 5.56 belt-fed LMG, so at range it doesn't sound like an AR, doesn't sound like a .50 cal — it has that rapid, metallic, slightly higher-pitched brrrrrt that you should be able to identify from 300m away by ear alone. Proper sound libraries record it in distinct close/medium/distant layers precisely because the perspective shift is so dramatic.
The problem is, BF6's current mix compresses that distance layering — distant gunfire blurs into one generic noise, so even if DICE added the M249 tomorrow, you couldn't tell it apart from an LMG at range. That's the real loss.
So yes, bring back the M249 — but bring it back with the distance-based acoustic identity it deserves. Let us hear that signature SAW chatter echoing across the map. That's what makes a weapon feel iconic, not just its stats.
