Whilst Battlefield may not be a Competitive game in the sense that it has no professional competitive scene, it is literally a competitive game.
The lore of the game is one army attempting to beat another.
The whole basis of every game mode is one team attempting to beat the other (or squad attempting to beat all other squads).
Every game mode has objectives, even death matches.
Battlefield has always been team/squad/objectives-based and those teams and squads while they attempt to complete objectives have always competed with others.
Yes, Battlefield has also always been somewhat of a sandbox experience. There are many ways to play.
Sure, just like in any game, you can ignore the objectives that everyone else is attempting, but when you do so you are letting that team down.
Just like in life, you can behave however you want. Behave selfishly if you want, but you are still behaving selfishly. It's not ok just because you can.
