It's yet another example of how BF has been dumbed down further. Not being able to change squad leader when they aren't being a squad leader is just stupid.
The suggested order AI commander thing is a not anything like a decent replacement. Squads should have autonomy.
Not only that but you'll find if you have a party going it still randomly reassigns the squad leadership each match and doesn't use the party leader even though that is no doubt what your party would prefer (and can override if not).
Just like many other BF6 systems, it's over-simplified, incomplete, buggy and badly designed.
