Bug recognizing disc after using REDSEC first

I purchased a Battlefield 6 disc today for my Xbox Series X but it will not let me play the campaign or multiplayer, as it it is prompting me to try to buy the game with "Upgrade Now."

It looks as if there's an issue with my account not recognizing the game disc that is in the console and only seeing the fact that I had previously downloaded REDSEC for free. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the entire game and rebooting multiple times to no avail.

It seems that I'm not the only one facing this issue based on a quick Google (e.g., Reddit)

  • I was able to access the campaign/multiplayer by unlinking my Xbox account after a full uninstall and relinking after a full reinstall from disc

I tried this after a number of different theories to debug the issue so it's possible one's required to do this relink immediately after a fully uninstall of Battlefield 6 (including all "game installed items," add-ons," and "Saved data" files) and then relink after downloading everything through the game disc. But given I was able to see the campaign no longer say "Upgrade Now" even before the campaign files finished downloading, my theory is that there's some kind of misconfiguration with how my EA account was tied to only have the free version of Battlefield 6 on Xbox since that was what I tried first. This could be further clarified if someone that is facing this issue tries starting the game up on someone else's Xbox that has the disc/digital game setup and working. It couldn't hurt to follow my full steps though since an unlink/relink can only be done once per six month period

After the fix, the behavior of "Upgrade Now" displaying in place of the campaign and multiplayer is the what I see if I am to quit Battlefield 6, remove the disc, and then open the game. I tried this exact sequence followed by shutting down the system, putting in the game, and then starting it up without getting past it until I performed the unlink/relink described above. For some reason, I am able to continue to see/play the campaign/multiplayer even after the disc has been removed as long as I do not quit the game so I'm guessing the check being done for the disc only occurs at start-up when Battlefield is logging into one's EA account

P.S. EA help is no help at all. I was unable to escalate this issue beyond whichever chat support agent I was connected to, only to be given a couple basic debugging ideas and pointed to this forum littered with many others completely unable to play the game they paid for. For anyone that is unable to play this game on physical disc, the only recourse seems to be to sell it second hand since retailers will not let you return your game once opened. What a terrible customer experience!
