Matchmaking broken (parties with users in dif regions)

As of about a week ago, something has changed in how matchmaking works on all game modes specifically effecting users with party members in different regions.
Context - I'm based in Australia and I've been playing with a friend based in the UK since launch. Matchmaking would always place us in the ASIA region EA servers which split our pings to around 150ms each (not great but completely playable for both of us) - we've been playing BF6 since the beta and have around 150h of playtime together in this scenario.
Since last week, no matter what - it will always place us in the European servers. Doesn't matter if I'm the party leader or not, if cross play is on or not, if I'm playing on PC or my PS5. The results are always the same.
Before the change:
(AU) Myself: Ping 150ms
(UK) Friend: Ping 160ms
* Assumption here is that matchmaking would place us in the ASIA servers splitting our ping evenly.
Since last week:
(AU) Myself: Ping 310ms (unplayable)
(UK) Friend Ping 20ms
It doesn't matter the game mode (all playlists do it), the results are always the same. All matchmaking will place us in the European EA servers. As soon as he leaves the party, I can match make right away and my ping is back to 20ms (defaults to Oceania, as expected). I'm mentioning this so not to confuse this as a connection issue on my end or anything like that. I'm 100% convinced matchmaking has been tweaked.
This means we can no longer play any official game modes together forcing us to use unpopulated community servers which just isn't fun at all.
Can someone at EA confirm why this change has been made, or is it a problem, and can we revert back to how it was working before?
I've already reached out to EA support but all they could provide me is that "the feedback has been sent to the studio" and to "check the announcements".
Can someone please look at this issue seriously. I'm gutted I can't play with my friends back in the UK anymore and it was working just fine for us before.
