I did find kind of a workaround...
By binding the gyro button to L2 (which is what I wanted anyway), I was able to go into the control settings and enter a gyro setting for each aim directions (well, two of them, since it's at least that smart). I was able to aim with the gyro, but with no assist from the right thumb stick, which is kind of a deal breaker.
While going through the settings, I've somehow got it so that the only method it DOESN'T work under is "zoomed only", i.e. the exact opposite of what I wanted. I've been through every other setting, and they all work as expected, so I'm not sure why I can't use the gyro ONLY while aiming now. I was given some hope when I originally assigned the gyro controls as it gave me a warning "this control is already being used for look up, aim up, freelook", and one of two others. Clearly a single input can support more than a single function. If I were on PC, I'd just have a look in the ini file to see if I could multi-task the aim to gyro and stick, but of course I'm on console.
I just finished the campaign on keyboard and mouse, which was really good (if a little short). I really hope they resolve this extremely basic issue ASAP, as I feel I'm playing at a serious disadvantage on a controller without gyro support.
EA/Dice, please get your house in order. For the kind of money that you charge, I shouldn't have to be waiting for 1.01 (or 1.02 or 2.247.294.399 or whatever ungoldy patchy number I have to wait for until this part of the core gaming experinece and be considered "finished", or at least functional) and hoping that it fixes my particular issue, it should just work. You're pricing your product at a level unseen in any previous media industry (Imagine dropping $100 on a CD or movie), but your standards for launch are lower than any other form of media. This really is unacceptable, please sort it out (and refund me).
You've been building this game for some time, and I'm saddened by the fact that $100 games are now routinely released with known bugs, games that you no longer have any distribution, logistical, transportation, and manufacture of a physical product, and retail floor space to sell. You've succeeded in destroying the used games market (CDs and DVDs would be drooling at the mouth for the level of avarice that you have achieved), and charge the same amount of money (well more, adjusted for inflation) for a product that doesn't cost you a dime to distribute. You've told us that we don't "own" the games we paid for, and that you can and will just take them away from us as is your wont, and succeeded in making CD and DVD companies look like virtual charities. You know it and I know it, but this cannot last. The walls will fall, and anyone will be able to play whatever game they're in the mood for at their convenience (a la Apple Music/Spotify and Netflix). Your greed at serving your shareholders first and your customers second will come back around, and as was a popular saying in my youth - when the revolution comes, you'll be among the first against the wall.
Best regards,
AJC
