RX 9070 – BF6 crashes during shader compilation black screen GPU Code 22/31

System:

  • GPU:AMD Radeon RX 9070
  • CPU:Ryzen 5 7600X
  • Motherboard:MSI B650
  • PSU:XFX 650W Gold, 650W
  • OS:Windows 10
  • Game:Battlefield 6 – Steam
  • GPU:Stock/default settings

Problem

Battlefield 6 was running normally for approximately one week with no problems. The issue then suddenly started. (Worked fine in previous seasons 1 and 2)

The crash is consistently associated with shader compilation when launching BF6.

The sequence is:

  1. Launch BF6.
  2. Shader compilation begins. (Gets stuck at 28.4%)
  3. GPU utilisation becomes extremely high during compilation.
  4. BF6 freezes.
  5. Monitor loses signal and the screen goes completely black.
  6. Game audio continues for approximately one minute.
  7. Win + Ctrl + Shift + B does not recover the display.
  8. A forced shutdown/restart is required.
  9. After reboot, the RX 9070 is disabled in Device Manager with Code 22.
  10. After re-enabling the GPU, I have also encountered Code 31 / AMD display driver failure.

The game is currently unable to get through the shader compilation stage reliably.

Windows errors observed

Reliability Monitor/Event Viewer has recorded:

  • LiveKernelEvent 193
  • Parameter 1: 801
  • Windows Hardware Error
  • AMD External Events Clientstopped working
  • Kernel-Power / Windows was not shut down properly following the forced restart

I have not found any WHEA errors.

Troubleshooting performed

I have already tried:

  • Steam file verification

o BF6 repeatedly reports 3 files failed to validate and will be reacquired

  • Completely uninstalling and reinstalling BF6
  • AMD Cleanup Utility
  • DDU in Safe Mode
  • Multiple clean AMD driver installations
  • Rolling back to AMD driver 25.10.13.02
  • GPU physically reseated
  • GPU power cable reseated
  • Running the GPU at stock/default settings
  • sfc /scannow

o Windows found and repaired corrupted system files

  • OCCT 3D Adaptive GPU stress test

o Heavy test ran for approximately 15 minutes without reported errors

  • Tested S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 for approximately 2 hours without a crash
  • Checked Windows Event Viewer and Reliability Monitor
  • Checked for WHEA errors

Important observation

The RX 9070 appears to be stable outside Battlefield 6.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 can run for approximately two hours without crashing, and the GPU also passes an OCCT GPU stress test.

The failure therefore appears to be strongly associated with Battlefield 6, specifically the shader compilation/loading stage.

Timing / possible 1.4.2.0 connection

The game worked normally for approximately a week before this problem appeared.

I believe the problem may have started around the BF6 1.4.2.0 update, although I cannot prove this conclusively.

Because the problem has also persisted after rolling back to AMD 25.10.13.02, I don't believe this can simply be attributed to the latest AMD driver.

Possible shader/engine issue

I've seen other reports of RX 9070/9070 XT systems experiencing black screens and GPU driver failures during BF6 shader compilation.

There has also been discussion that the shader compilation workload may be placing an unusually heavy load on the GPU. During my own crashes, GPU utilisation appears to reach 100% during shader compilation immediately before the display is lost.

I am not claiming that BF6 is physically over-volting or damaging the GPU, but I am wondering whether there is an issue with the BF6/Frostbite shader compilation workload and the AMD RDNA 4 driver/GPU scheduling or boost behaviour.

What I would like to know

Has EA/DICE identified any known issue with:

Battlefield 6 1.4.2.0 + AMD RX 9000/RDNA 4 + shader compilation

causing:

shader compilation → GPU/driver hang → black screen → Code 22/31 after reboot?

I unfortunately don't have a BF6/ Amd crash dump files handy,

Thanks.

  • I repaired the game, didnt work. I uninstalled the game and reinstalled, still doing it. Played a match of Fortnite just to check, that was fine, and marvel rivals booted and got shaders as well just fine. Someone said remove Windows 26H2 and that didnt work either.

  • Mine just started doing this with EA launcher as well. I noticed my AMD driver got auto updated by windows 11...I rolled back to 26.8.1, now during shader compilation around 28% like you said it crashes back to desktop. Nothing in reliability viewer. I deleted shaders and stuff, not sure whats up.
