AMD FX 8350 & Evga GTX 970 Low FPS/Usage

Hello everyone! I really enjoy playing Battlefield and I have sunk so much money into my PC to run it so I can have a good time playing it. Well about a month or two ago I upgraded my PC, clean installed windows, and now I am here today with this issue. Before I get too in-depth here are my specifications:

CPU: AMD FX 8350 (Stock)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H80i Liquid Cooler (Temps are about 25 idle and 48 under load so no throttling)

Ram: 16gb Gskill Ripjaws @1600mhz

GPU: Evga GTX 970 SC

Motherboard: Asrock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer

PSU: Corsair CX750m

Ok with that said here are the things I have tried:

-Clean installation of Windows

-Defragging my hard drive

-Moving GPU to another PCI-E Slot

-Changing cables on PSU

-Upgrading my ram

-Disabling things in bios (Cool & Quiet, Turbo core, etc)

-Overclocking both CPU and GPU

-Changing power in nvidia control panel to prefer maximum performance

-Also changing the power mode to performance in windows

-Reinstalling Battlefield 4

Also to add onto this my friend has the same specs as me but just Corsair ram and he is getting the same performance issues. So hopefully if there could be a solution it would fix his performance as well. Alright so onto the frames. I usually get 55-80 fps and it is always fluctuating and jumping around. The reason this is happening is because I noticed my GPU usage is not reaching its maximum 98% or even 99%. It is very upsetting because this game is awesome and I just want to get a constant framerate I can enjoy. I also have another friend with the exact same motherboard and processor as me yet he has dual radeon GPU's (Sorry I forgot the models) and he runs well over 100 fps with a constant 99% usage! So this CPU is definitely not a bottleneck. Now this is the weird thing, when I play single player campaign on BF4 I get pretty good usage (About a constant 98% usage with the occasional drops) yet once I go into multiplayer all that good performance just goes away. I really hope we can narrow down the reasons as to why this is happening. Maybe is it the 970 and FX 8350 just not the best couple for this? I just sunk so much money into my PC and I can't really afford anymore things and I was hoping this build would be perfect.  Thanks guys! :catvery-happy:

  • Good news guys. I am finally happy with my results. Check out my GPU load now:

As you can see its in the 90's almost all the time with occasional drops. Has my FPS improved? Somewhat. It now rarely drops below 60 and stays between 80-90 frames which is perfect for me.

Now the fix. I was messing around in my bios and seeing the difference between 4.8ghz and 4.6ghz to see if it changed much. As stupid as this may sound, I looked more into my bios and noticed that some of the power savings features were still on which I thought I had off all this time. I am not positive if this is the fix but here is some that most likely played into solving this:

    -Upgrading to Windows 8.1

    -Overclocking to 4.6ghz

-Disabling power saving features in bios

All I can say is I remember doing hundreds of tests on windows 7 with power savings off in my bios and my usage was all over the place so I have a pretty good feeling the upgrade to Windows 8.1 helps. Big thanks to Zorlacc and MorningTimeCloud for trying their best to help me through this as best as they could have. Hope this helps anyone else but I just don't want anyone to have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 and not have their issue fixed. :cattongue:

Yep, tried all of that and even did a clean install of the current driver without Geforce Experience. To my surprise still the same garbage FPS. At this point I have just basically given up. Honestly I most likely will go back to console because with the expense to go to intel and get everything changed out there simply is no use. I am just extremely tiered of sinking more and more money into this pit called a PC. I spend over 1000$ to get everything right and yet my issues still persist. I basically am dead in the water because I want to enjoy PC by building it and being content with it and not have to worry about all this bull. If you could think of anything else (Completely understandable if you can't) at this point you would be a lifesaver but from the looks of it I literally tried almost everything under the sun. My luck as well, the first actual decent PC that can run AAA games performs at an 800$ build :catindifferent:

  • If I recall correct some issues with the 970 cards :/ I would just run the game on low video settings for now to get the FPS up as well as read toms hardware regarding this card. The only other thing I can think to try this second is to turn down the resolution scale in game to get the FPS up, I just looked it up and found this to back it up...... " in game and resolution scale decreases the fps at 150%" source: Scroll down to Best solution...  http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2555547/gtx970-fps-battlefield-low.html Edit ... try this... ingame under video... resolution scale to under 100 like 80 or 90 this will up you FPS

Edit just thought of this as well but it could just be a bad driver for the video card adding to this so if you want to try....

Video Card drivers and doing a clean install.Credit goes to aT1C for his steps

Note.. with the video card driver it installs so much junk :womanfrustrated: and some of it just makes issues so if you want it this is how I do my driver now as I have my BF fully stable and I want to keep it this way .

First I only install two things from it 1- Graphics Driver 2- PhysX System they can keep the rest :womanlol: See steps below.

This is how you do a clean graphic driver clean install:Credit goes to aT1C for his steps
Start by downloading your graphic card drivers from here,

    AMD; http://support.amd.com/en-us/download
    NVidia; http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Download the one you have and save it on desktop, you are going to need it!
After downloading the video card driver follow these instructions to the letter,

    1- press windows button,

    2- right click my computer,

3- press property’s, you will get a new window here.

4- in the new window click device manger on your left side of the screen, you will get another new window here,

5- you will see in the latest window a list of devices you have in your computer, click on the arrow beside Display driver and a small fall down menu will show you what kind of graphic card you have.

6- left click on your (graphic card name) so it’s highlighted in blue,

7- right click (graphic card name) and press property’s, you will get a new small window here,

8- in the new small window click on Drivers, you will see the name between the tabs,

9- in the driver menu click on uninstall, you will now get a really small window that ask you if you’re really sure that you want to uninstall you’re graphic card drivers,

    10- click ok,

11- after you have uninstall you’re drivers restart you’re computer,

12- after you have started up your computer, click on your graphic card install file,

13- follow the instructions of your graphic card installer, Pick Custom / Advanced and only check off for Nvidia 1- Graphics Driver 2- PhysX System and for AMD card only check off display driver and catalyst control center.

14- when you have Install your graphic card drivers, restart / Reboot your computer,

    15- you’re done.

Just tried that and got about the same fps and maybe a little less drops but I am not too sure. I guess Battlefield 4 is not the best with the 970 and FX 8350. I have been a level 16 for 4 months just trying to fix this issue so I can play comfortably. Thanks for all the help but I guess I might just have to check BF4 off the list of games that run bad on a 1300$ build which should run this just fine. Its very upsetting because BF4 was on of the games I was looking forward to playing.

  • If you take video card settings off ultra and go to med or low you should be able to play nicely.

    Exactly this @Cursed_img

You won't be able to play on Ultra. If you have windows 8.1, you'll be able to get a bit more.

  • I have upgraded to window 8.1. Also I would play on medium or low but that's just covering up the issue. See, I had a GTX 760 and ran at medium and low. Do you know how degrading it feels to have to play on the same setting once you upgraded your whole PC. Ever since I had my 760 I upgraded my Ram, CPU, Motherboard, and GPU. Yet I still have to run at the same setting.

    Old PC Specs:

    AMD FX 6300 - Upgraded to 8350

    8Gb 800mhz - Upgraded to 16gb 1600mhz Ram

    GTX 760 - Upgraded to 970

Gigabyte gigabyte ga-78lmt-usb3 - Upgraded to Asrock Fatal1ty 990fx Killer

With all those upgrades said and done you would think I should be able to run this game on ultra. Not to sound too extreme but if I just go on every game I own and put it on low or medium settings, I am basically covering up the situation. I should be able to run this game hands down on my build at 1080p. Not to mention someone replied to me on Nvidia's forums saying this:

I just want to get to the bottom of this issue. Not only for me but for my friend as well who has virtually the same specifications. I have spent hours looking through forum after forum to see if this issue was resolved for anyone else. My temps are fine, I overclocked, and upgraded almost every single item on my PC. I also know the whole lecture of how single core games do not fair well with FX processors but I know Battlefield 4 uses a lot more cores then most.

@Cursed_img I have similar specs that you have, there's a full list in my signature if you want to see it. I have tweaked a few settings to where i have lots of things disabled or set to low, the things that make the game look nice are set to high and one setting is on ultra, if you would like to try out the in game settings i use i can link a screenshot here of it. I always have well over 100 frames.

  • Wow your specs are very close to mine. Sure I will give it a shot. Also do you get around my FPS on ultra as well?

  • Good news guys. I am finally happy with my results. Check out my GPU load now:
