Battlefield 3 – “Could not activate” / Signed in as blank

Hi everyone,

I’ve been trying to get Battlefield 3’s campaign working for weeks now and I’m stuck. My soldier “Riskybullets” shows up on Battlelog, and I’ve confirmed I own the game. But when I try to launch it, I get:

  • “Could not activate Battlefield 3”
  • “You are signed in as: [blank]”

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Revo Uninstaller for a full clean uninstall (EA App, BF3, leftover folders)
  • Reinstalled everything fresh
  • BF3_License_Fixer and Venice Unleashed
  • Launching via EA App and directly through bf3.exe
  • Manually removed the license key
  • Edited the registry via regedit to clear out old license data

Still no luck. I only want to play the single-player campaign, but I can’t get past this license issue. Has anyone found a solution for this?

  • I found a solution to my problem that fixed my game using Venice Unleashed. The usual fix involves typing the following command:

    vu.exe -activate -o_mail Email -o_pass Password

However, I used a different command:

    vu.exe -activate -lsx -wait

This generates a token, which resolved the “Could not activate” prompt I was getting. If the token doesn’t automatically register, you can manually activate it using:

    vu.exe -activate -ea_token "yourTokenHere"

After that, just launch Venice Unleashed. Once it's running, you should also be able to boot the regular game.

Update: I found the fix by moving a liscense file from ProgramData. I couldn't figure out the VU situation, and I did download form their website but perhaps I used the command prompt incorrectly. Thank you anyways!

I tried all of these and all of my responses are: vu.exe -activate -lsx -wait
'vu.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command,
    operable program or batch file.

It seems like I have to replace Mass Effect 3 with Battlefield 3, does your method still work right?

Sorry but the VU.exe is not compatible with Mass Effect 3. It was designed exclusively for Battlefield 3

Does this work for Mass Effect 3 too? I'm having the same "Could not activate" issue with that game.

  • I just wanted to add that I’ve already spoken to two EA advisors, but unfortunately, they weren’t able to resolve the issue either.
