Re: BF4 PC Memory leaking? 94% Memory usage with 12GB

@rcglider

Off topic, but I thought I'd ask. I had actually been thinking of getting a 280x, but I've been seeing reports of people getting annoying graphics flickering when doing 2d tasks with r9 cards (using the desktop, web browsing etc... doesn't happen in 3d games, something to do with the 2d clock). have you ran into that issue at all?

Anyway, good to hear at least the newer AMD cards don't seem to suffer from this issue. Your post, + the fact that I haven't seen a single post in this thread from anyone with an r9 card complaining about this issue seems to indicate that.

  • I have not experienced any flickering at all.  My current monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster P2770.

    My old rig was going on 5 years and was planning a new build anyway. The question was staying with AMD  or switch to Intel (last Intel was well over 10 years ago) and nVidia; no loyalty to either, and AMD had been a good bang for the buck, but this time the 4770k seemed like a good choice for BF4 and got it for $279, so figured what the hey.   I almost pulled the trigger on a 780, but decided to try out the 280x first. There was no 290x non-reference card out yet and generally ~$300 is about my limit on video cards. The way people were talking, BF4 looked to require a very high end GPU. That is certainly not the case in reality.

    I can't compare to an AMD 8350 (for example), but the combination in this new setup exceeds well beyond what I expected. 75+ FPS  average with 50 minimum in Ultra/HBAO was not even on the radar. Nothing is overclocked. There is no lag at all on any map, even in Operation Locker with mobs of players packed in a small area with nades going off etc. I really put it to the test.

    The 280x, IMO at this point, is the sweet spot for BF4, but is subject to change. I don't trust "benchmarks" much, only real world in-game tests with full servers.

    Dice/EA will fix the issues, people will just have to be patient. I like BF4 better than BF3 as it is has the commander and VOIP like BF2, and the nade spamming is greatly reduced, which to me is a definite plus. Sadly, sniper overpopulation is becoming commonplace, oh well.

    Well I'm still getting the memory leaks with my 6950.

    Not long until I pull the trigger on an R9 290/X whichever works out better value when I do.

    Seeing as the R9 280X is just s rebadged 7970 GHz edition I'd grab one of them as they are being sold off and stupid prices at the moment. My issue with those is they are well over a year old tech wise getting on for 2yrs old now. The 290 has a fairly  large advancement in areas like Crossfire (bridgeless) and internal architechture as well as 4GB of RAM and a 512-bit memory controller (much faster than the 384-bit one in the 7970).

    The non-reference cooler versions are around in a couple of weeks so that's when the decision shall be made.

    Seeing as I have BF4 already I think I'll be grabbing Thief 4 with the never settle bundle.

    Oh and EA tech support are just hired answer phones and text monkey's with little to zero knowledge about any of the games they get questioned about. Useless in every way unless demanding things like replacement codes for locked securom games. Even then you have to bitch at them for hours before they cave in and solve the problem instead of blaming you.

  • I'm tired of talking to EA support about this and trying to help them find the root cause. Here's what I can gather so far from digging through and reading most of the 45 pages here.

    Windows 8.x systems on 5000 and 6000 series AMD cards are the most affected by far. There have been a small number of Nvidia users reporting the issue as well but it's rampant on the 5000 and 6000 series cards. The " ea advisor" I spoke to told me to upgrade my drivers and blah blah blah even after I sent him my dxdiag info which shows him that it's already up to date. Upgrade my drivers to 13.9 he says... Except 13.11 Beta 9.2 is 2 months newer and optimized for Battlefield 4... Jebus... Update my catalyst control center (which if he knew anything he'd know it's packaged with the driver anyway...). As we all know, none of this works.

    Alas, I give up. I'm going to pick up a R9 290 in the next couple days and drop that in to see if it's just these generations of cards that have the issue. It's just sad that it's come to this since my 6950 runs the game perfectly fine on my hex core i7 with 16GB of RAM but eventually whatever coding error is going on in the background, the game becomes unplayable after a couple of rounds requiring a reboot of the machine to reset the system memory. It's completely unacceptable to expect people to have machines that easily destroy the minimum specifications. Basically, if you own these cards and run them on the current windows OS, it boils down to: you need to upgrade/change the card. If the new card doesn't resolve the issue then I'm going to go postal on EA.

    Going with AMD again after this (and similar problems with older cards in bf3)?  Brave.  I figure the same thing would just happen two years from now when the next game is out.

    Seems like even with the memory leak fixed everyone has constant crashes- may want to hold off a bit until most of them are ironed out.  Not holding my breath, but it's possible our issue gets fixed by that time.

    @machinations

    bf4 has crashing issues on both amd and nvidia atm. There was a catalyst bug causing crashes/red screens, but that was fixed in 13.11 beta 8. I'm sure many of the crash issues are with bf4 itself.

    I also never recall having this issue with BF3 with my 6950 in windows 8, and I had 150 or so hours of playtime (It has been a few months since I played bf3 though, mabye the bug was introduced recently?)

    Yep, that's why I advised the holding off on purchasing a replacement card until the game itself is stable on a majority of systems- otherwise our problem might be fixed along with the rest.  This particular issue is a repeating (bf3 to bf4) AMD-specific problem though.

    Here's a thread RE: BF3 and the exact same leak.  I "upgraded" to 8 for the extra DX11 features a few weeks ago so I didn't have those problems in BF3.  But if you search "bf3 memory leak" on google you'll see a lot of similar things to this thread.

    I totally remember that BF3 leak issue, it was back when I had a 5870. I wanted to upgrade anyway so I did to a 6970 and here I am now with the same problem for BF4.

    Sadly history really is repeating itself as I had planned to upgrade anyway so I hit the button on a 290x yesterday :P

    Well... glad to know i'm not the only one. My memory usage was getting up to 98% with 16 gigs and it was all background stuff, nothing I could close out of. Outrageous. I have since stopped trying to play. Sucks for me that I wasted my money on "Premium."

    AMD phenom II to 3.5ghz

    AMD 6950 ---- I agree that this may be the problem.

    16 gb ram

    non SSD

    Win 8/8.1/7 (I've tried them all, same problem)
