Re: Lost Connection to the Session

If you are having troubles connecting, or losing connection to our EA servers, please read the information below. This information below should help you understand how your internet connection works and how you can work with settings to make it better.

NAT type is one of the single most important and most overlooked aspects to a quality online gaming experience. Learning how NAT type works and how to forward your router/firewall’s ports correctly will save you countless hours of headaches trying to understand why your connection isn’t as strong as it could be.  While sudden disconnects can occur for a variety of reasons, a good way to gauge whether it is your internet connection or something else is by paying attention to your Xbox LIVE/PSN connectivity as well. If you’re having to sign back on, or losing connection to your party/VOIP session, then the problem is likely coming from NAT/firewall or ISP restrictions.

First things first. Are you using a Microsoft/Sony suggested router? The Microsoft and Sony support pages have a wealth of information on how to properly set up your console in your home network (including lists of recommended router types).

Xbox- http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/settings-and-initial-setup/console-setup
Ps3- http://us.playstation.com/csimg/global/PS3_CBLrouter_1_0.pdf

If you’re using a wireless router connection and experiencing connectivity issues, try plugging your console directly into the router. There are many reasons that wireless connectivity can suddenly drop but the easiest way to be sure that it ISNT your wireless connection, is to see if the problem persists after your console is directly connected with an Ethernet cable. If you’re wireless savvy you can try changing your wireless channel (refer to your router instructions for additional info).

If you’re directly connected to your router and still experiencing connectivity issues the problem is more than likely, your NAT type. The easiest and most simple way around these issues is to enable UPnP or Universal Plug-n-Play.

  1. First, you need to access your router’s config page to see if it supports UPnP.  (Router config pages can usually be found on any literature that came with the device, or even the manufacturers website.)
  2. Usually this is a separate portion of the config page that allows the user to check or uncheck a UPnP box (enable or disable). Once you find this box, enable UPnP and back out.
  3. Save your config page changes and reboot your console. Performing a Network test now should reveal that you NAT is open (the optimal Online gaming condition)
  4. Play through a full game to see if the problem persists

If you are directly connected to your router, do NOT have UPnP capabilities (or it didn’t work to enable UPnP) and are still experiencing connectivity issues the problem is still, more than likely, your NAT type- only it is now slightly harder to fix. The process and exact steps of forwarding your ports will vary depending on the make and model of your router but in depth tutorials can be found here.

http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/settings-and-initial-setup/console-setup

The steps for Ps3 are exactly the same except you would change the specific port numbers to-
UDP 3659
UDP 6000
TCP 9946
TCP 42100
TCP 13000 -> 13100

After forwarding your ports, always make sure to save your config page changes and reboot your kit to ensure that settings are taking effect.

If you are still experiencing problems with disconnects contact your ISP support line to see if setting up a ‘DMZ’ is the right option for you. (Always take care when exploring this option as it could potentially open your network to unwanted communication.)

If you’ve exhausted all NAT options and still find yourself disconnecting from the EA servers- write down every step/action you take on the way to the point of disconnect (make a note of any special settings/options you have personalized in the game) and communicate the problem to an appropriate forum thread. EA employees are constantly monitoring and researching community issues. The more thoroughly researched and reported the issue, the quicker the fix can be put together.

I know everything about NAT, etc. I have the same problem. Every time I connect to a session, and start the game, I could play for about 2 minutes. Then, my connection drops along with the message 'lost connection to the session'. There is nothing wrong with my router, my modem or my PS3. All are at optimum working levels. I know because I tested the PS3 with other games with nary a hint of connection problems. I played BF2 for hours without dropping a single connection. I know the problem lies with BF3. Would anyone care to explain why my BF3 is going to be getting tossed into the garbage, forcing me to contact my own connections in the retail industry to suggest to potential customers NOT to purchase BF3? I do in fact have that capability, and I do so with the largest corporation on earth. I may even suggest to said monster corporation that they pull the product altogether since there are far, far too many complaints regarding the online portion of the game. Surely the retail giant I speak of does not want millions of disgruntled customers, no?

This is a widespread server side issue. Here are several threads from battlelog on the issue:

    SOURCE: https://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/forum/threadview/2832654348320786061/

There have been six various threads I have read on this topic throughout the forums.

What I can gather from all the various conversations are the following:

PS3 servers are crashing, booting everyone in the game.
The error being displayed upon booting is "You have lost connection to the session."
The server crashing or booting seems to occur when the server hits the max game member capacity...so 24/24 gamers in the game, as opposed to 17/24 people in the game.
I first noticed the issue after 10pm EDT on Friday, but others have reported the issue as early as 6pm EDT on Friday.
The issue seems to effect United States based servers most.
Both DICE/EA servers and Rented servers both have this issue.
Both Premium members and non premium members are being affected/kicked.

I was able to play a few rounds without being kicked around 3PM EDT today (Saturday), the server was full at one point. This has been the only time in the past two days that I have not been kicked.

Thank you for looking into this matter.

    Hi,

I am also having the same problem as the above poster.  I have been playing BF2BC and BF3 on my playstation for years with no problems until last week when I switched my ISP.

I switched from Comcast to Verizon Fios and now I get disconnected with the 'lost connection to the session' error in every multiplayer game that I join, usually within 1-2 minutes, but sometimes up to 4-5 minutes.  I have no idea if this problem is related to the ISP change or not, but other posters seem to have just started to get the error within the last week or so.

I have the Fios combined modem/router with my PS3 plugged/wired directly into it.  Everything seems to work fine until the DC happens.  I have run the internet connection test in the PS3 and get good speed (20-22 down, 1-3 up) with NAT type 2.  UPnP shows 'available'.  I have also went into the router interface and port forward the ones in your post for the PS3's IP.  Still no luck.

I am not a tech wiz, but do I have to be to in order to play the game?

Anybody have any suggestions for me to try?  Thanks for any help in advance...

EDIT: as a test I tried BF2BC for the first time since BF3 came out... It worked perfectly.

@DHS135:  it's not you mate, Battlelog is Full of ppl with the same issues. The problem is not customer-side.

some ppl have blamed hurricane Sandy, but that is just poppycock; Power was restored to affected areas long long time ago. It appears its only affecting US East servers.

the bit that troubles me is the concerted uninterested ignorant responses by EA/DICE to what amounts to a corporate sponsored denial of service epic fail.

    hey n00beris,

It is January 15th of 2013 and the BF3 is STILL disconnecting at least every other game...or when it is a long game.

I have done every step you have suggested...all the way to DMZing my router connection.  Verizon Fios even sent me a new router...thinking that it was theh problem...it wasn't.  Resetting, restarting, rebooting....nothing is working.

It is getting really frustrating to start a game, have to rejoin it at 0 with my friends asking if I got disconnected AGAIN...while they are still on...

I have searched so many places and it seems that this problem is prevalent...

EA monitors, please fix this...I am a loyal BF3 player, but this is really testing my patience.

    thank you,

I have been dealing with this also for 5 days now, it started last friday. I have made to calls too support 2 online support chats and still the same problem. I love how they tell me to have my router checked, The only game that I am having a issue with is BF3. All my COD games are working fine, my BLKops games are working fine its just BF3. Im not even accross the ocean I live 20 minutes North from EA headquarters in Maitland, FL. I just test my coonection speeds coming into the house hardwired 105mb, and my wifi is at 60mb. I am about to go to gamestop and put my money for BF4 into some thing else. this is not right pay for game-pay for online play-pay for premium content. but I can not finish a 100 kill game .........

I am playing BF1 on  a PC and have seen this issue in the past. Then it goes away. It reappeared on Saturday. I was able to play a few games but since then have been seeing the error message: "you have lost the connection to the session". I have tried resetting my Xfinity router, flushing DNS, etc. All to no avail. I believe this is a server side issue, not a local issue on my side of the connection. I have tried repairing the game, uninstalling it and reinstalling it only to get the same error message. Also, I am on the East coast and have noticed recently that I am seeing less and less servers available to play on. Sometimes as little as 5 or 6 servers. Something is not right on EA's side of this. It needs to be addressed and soon....
