What's 3D about 3D spotting?

Just curious really. Why isn't it just called spotting? What makes it "3D"?

As the wiki mentions: "The spotting mechanic is so-called "3D" spotting, which means that a small red diamond appears over the body of an enemy on the player's HUD, as well as a minimap marker, for a short time. Sometimes, merely targeting an enemy will bring up the red diamond."

Yeah I'd seen the wiki article on it but it doesn't really explain why it's 3D. You could remove the word 3D from it and it would make just as much sense.

    It´s a 3D game, the enemy isn´t just spotted on the minimap but also in your field of view, so it´s 3D then 🙂
