I agree! Why show it if we can't use it?

I'm wondering if we can't change numbers because the game allows for the same number to be used for both offensive and defensive players? Maybe they don't want us to "accidentally" give two guys on offense number 7 (as an example). Although you'd think they'd be able to put something in to prevent that. In my RTG, I'm number 5 but so is my starting RB and no penalty is called when we are on the field together.
My issue is that I'm not always sure who is making the play because I didn't assign them the number. For example, if number 14 on the defense makes a tackle along the sideline, was it a safety? Was it a corner? Was it a linebacker? Assigning a number helps me know who the players are. I also don't like playing a QB on the other team with a number in the 20s. This isn't the 1980s.
