Safety Free Kick out of Bounds

I just scored a safety against someone.  On the ensuing free kick, the ball went out of bounds.  The game then gave me the ball on my 30 yard line.  It did not give me an option on the kick out of bounds penalty either. 

I'm pretty sure that this is incorrect.  For one thing, if a kickoff were to go out of bounds, wouldn't i get the ball on my 40?  I think the idea behind free kicks is that the receiving team is supposed to get excellent field position, better than on a regular kickoff.
