Online Divisions for Road to the College Football Playoff

Can someone please help me understand Online Divisions for Road to the College Football Playoff?

I have been watching users playing online and at the beginning of the game it shows each player's record, division, and global rank. I'm surprised to see players in the Heisman division playing against people in Freshman or Recruit division.

How is this possible? I thought you play against players in your same division. Is that not how it works?

Well, so far, I've only played 4 games and all of them have been against players in my division, so, this appears to be working as expected.
