Anything running in Linux?

I bought the collection but I'm in Linux on a daily basis and rarely get in Windows (mostly for updates), so I was wondering if anyone managed to run some of the games with Linux.

Well, I know the people at cncnet have made mac and linux solutions, using Wine I think, but I'm not sure if what's inside those isn't just a stripped down multiplayer-only version.

As far as I know, the classics run rather well on Wine. I'd advise using the true standalone freeware versions then, though:

Command & Conquer 1, Red Alert 1 and Tiberian Sun are all freeware, and have all been upgraded with community-created unofficial patches that fix a lot of their bugs and compatibility problems. You can find them here:

    Command & Conquer 1:

    Red Alert 1:

    Tiberian Sun:

I think all of the patches include certain dll overrides to fix certain malfunctioning systems, though, like thipx32.dll, ddraw.dll and wsock32.dll. From what I remember, those weren't handled automatically by Wine unless you added them to Wine's dll overides specifically. Not sure if that changed, but it's certainly something to keep in mind.

For the rest... no clue how well Origin combines with Wine. Doesn't exactly seem like a winning combination to me...

The Red Alert 1 installer Nyerguds linked does take care of the .dll overrides on wine automatically, just run it under wine

To play online you need to install winetricks dotnet 2.0 + winetricks GDIplus manually though

  • @Nyerguds: Thanks for the detailed answer. Indeed, it's easier to try the already freely released games but I actually meant the Collection itself, as it comes in Origin. Red Alert 2 and 3 would be my first targets, and then others. Although the Origin client has been announced to work with wine 1.7.50, I couldn't make it work with my wine 1.7.55. When I click Explain this, wine simply crashes.

@FunkyFr3shCnCNet: Thanks for the extra info.

I have other games in Origin so it would be great if EA stepped in to work with the wine people for proper support of the client until/if they decide making a Linux version of the client. I was actually hoping I would see some interest on EA's side to support Linux.

P.S. I reported the bug to the wine community.
