Plenty of people have come to this conclusion and I gave them all the same question: Have you actually looked at the crates and their costs? Have you sat down and really figured out their value?
Sure, a colossal crate sounds great at first! Plenty of cash, and cards! But it's really only a week or so of free to play crates. To actually get a good +2 or +3 advantage on your peers requires HUNDREDS of dollars invested. And even then, it's a minor advantage, because 2-3 weeks and that person that didn't pay has now caught up, and has fought at a disadvantage for most of those games and has learned good habits and strategies while the paying player has not. He has developed bad habits that make him lose matches against players who are lower level.
Believe it or not, there are quite a few players now with level 15 units. Maxed out. How come they aren't at the top of the leaderboard? Well they lose most of their matches to -4 and -5 players who have learned all the lessons these guys have robbed themselves of by paying.
So to sum up, that guy that has +2 over you? Probably hasn't paid anything. He's just stuck there because he has a poor strategy. The people that HAVE paid, are well out of your bracket (trust me) and they play worse than the guys you play now.
I would hands down rather play against someone who can't play the game but has bought their levels over someone who is around my level and very good with their skill.
