Command & Conquer RA2 and YR not working correctly?

Hey guys, so I recently installed Red Alert 2 + Yuri through the Ultimate Collection version because I grew up with it and it's one of my favorite computer games.  I already knew there were some problems so I went ahead and changed compatibility to Windows XP Service Pack 3, I didn't bother with the color settings because I wanted to play in full screen.  I started an Allied campaign and as I was playing suddenly my laptop decided to go back to the desktop even though I didn't press the Windows key, and when I tried to go back into the game it went black.  I could hear my GIs attacking the Soviets, I just couldn't see it.  I had to go back to my desktop and terminate the game through task manager, haven't tried again since.

What can I do to fix this?  I'm running Windows 8.1 and I'm wanting to update to 10 but not sure if that would screw things up.  Another minor thing that happened was when I held my mouse down to drag over my soldiers my regular Windows cursor appeared by my in game cursor and didn't cooperate.  Instead of clicking like usual I had to double tap my mouse pad and do it that way.  Everything else seemed to be okay.

Thanks!

The graphics system patch DDWrapper is known to solve a bunch of problems in RA2.

Download the zip file and extract "ddraw.dll" and "aqrit.cfg" into your game folder. Then, open the configuration file "aqrit.cfg" in Notepad, change the "ForceDirectDrawEmulation" option to 1, save the file, and the game should work.

There's also another similar patch floating around, called TS-ddraw, which was specifically made for Tiberian Sun and RA2.

Was this in RA2 or Yuri's Revenge, though? Yuri's Revenge might act slightly different than Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 since it always switches to 800x600 resolution for its main menu.
