Command & Conqure on Windows 10 - Issues I Faced
To begin with I haven't played or downloaded all the games. But I have downloaded and played following games so far on Windows 10.
1) Command & Conqure + Expansion (New Missions)
2) Command & Conqure Tiberium Sun + Firestorm
3) Command & Conqure Red Alert + Expansions (New Missions)
4) Command & Conqure Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge
5) Command & Conqure Red Alert 3 + Uprising
All these games work soon after installation, without any tweak, on Windows 10. At least they should, unless something in our computer messes things up.
Here are some issues I faced during installations and I don't think it has anything to do with Windows 10. I think all the games in collection works fine on Windows 10 unless something unexpected happen during or after installation.
Tip 1: Take a copy of the installation folder of each game soon after it installs once. If something goes wrong, this might help during diagnosis.
Tip 2: Never click the "cancel download" button on Origin without having any backup of whatever you've downloaded already. If you do this, Origin will delete all files in installation location, making you to download them again.
If you have a copy, then you can copy those files in to installation location and rerun the download from Origin. This might make your life a bit easier.
Issue 1: Command & Conquer Installation + AVG Antivirus
When downloading and installing Command and Conqure 1 and its expansion try disabling AVG for a bit, if you face any problems.
I noticed that AVG detects CNC95Launcher.exe as a threat and immediately quarantines it. The biggest problem is, once this is done, it is impossible to install it again without putting the AVG to sleep.
Once it quarantines the file, it blocks copying the exact file to the installation location. If you try to install again you might get the following error.
"There was a problem while updating your game. One or more files that requires an update may be in use. If the issue persists please restart your computer and resume the update."
First I thought this is caused by a blocked file but actually AVG is preventing the installation and blocking the file path to CNCLauncher.exe.
When I try to run the game using C&C95.exe, the game doesn't seem to run. It messes with the resolution and comes back to normal desktop without any result. So it seems CNCLauncher.exe is important to play the game on Windows 10.
It took me some time to figure this out as AVG didn't tell me what it's done with CNCLauncher.exe. From the quarantined list, I couldn't restore the file. AVG gives an error while doing it.
So, I had to disable AVG before reinstalling and playing the game.
Issue 2: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 Black screen
This issue is with Red Alert 2. Yuri's Revenge works fine without any tweak.
To be honest, I haven't found a way around with this without a third party helper. But for certain it has to be something with my computer but not the game files itself.
Finally, I started using "DDWrapper" as community suggested. It works really fine but don't Ctrl + Tab out or Windows + D into another app or desktop while you are playing the game. This seems to crash it, requiring the game to close and open again. If this happens, use Task Manager to kill the running application, then restart it. You'll probably lose your progress as there's no other way to save.
This is all I can say, and this is all I encountered so far. I can say other than these two issues, all games I installed worked fine.
I hope this helps someone.
